Cautiously optimistic about this team. Primarily the D.
2 reason why?
1. I was not a fan of the Randy Melvin hiring but if he has shown this group how to be technicians & fundamentally sound I expect the DL play to improve significantly. I'm big fan of coaches who preach technique. Never was a fan of Jethro, he was the biggest fraud in CFB to me. If Randy has shown these boys counter moves, how to use their hands & they're in better physical shape( ie Courtel losing 10 lbs) we should see more pressure & tfls.
2. My favorite group; the DBs. Artie saying he expects to run more man is good too hear but kind of in a wait & see about that. What makes me happy is too hear, is Artie having a good camp. I truly believe track was holding him back. He was very raw coming out of MNW & he needed to be coached up & get as many reps as possible. I think the added practice & reps during the spring helped a lot . Instead of splitting time he made a commitment to get technically better & I think he did. Hope to see him getting that head around & getting some int.
Of course I love the return of Jenkins. Haven't heard much about his play in camp but I expect him to be a player once the whistle blows in Sept. Elder is one of my favs in the entire group. After Bush IMO Mr. Tenn is the best tackling DB they have. Willing & able tackler Elder has the size, speed & ball hawking ability to be a good corner.
Dallas & Carter know the playbook inside & out they should be able to play fast & real physical over the middle. One thing they have to do is set the tone early but don't be foolish in getting personal foul penalties.
I don't remember if it was Elder but one of the DBs said having all the S back allows you take chances under. & he's correct these boys should be jumping everything, if they can take the ball away, flip the field or even return some for TDs it should definitely help win more games. The Added possessios for Kaaya increase TOP & helps the turnover margin. 2 things Golden wanted to improve.
Am I wrong for feeling this way? Or should I just hope they go 7-5 & a new staff comes in?
