I honestly don’t know how Manny came up with this number. Maybe he has some absurd technical definition of a player’s eligibility or positioning during a play that keeps this number lower but, while it seemed better against Pitt, I saw plenty of whiffs, slips and missed tackles. They just didn’t seem to go for touchdowns or the defense tightened up on subsequent plays to get stops. I am a Manny supporter but it does feel like he sometimes insults our intelligence with some of his spin routines. What I can plainly see is that this defense is not a good tackling defense and we give up far too many yards after contact (including players hitting guys from behind and taking them three yards further downfield, often for first downs) and we are terrible at long range defense. It seems like opposing offenses either get a large chunk on 2nd and long or convert 3rd and long easily against us (or even 4th and long for that matter!) This is just not what dominant defenses do. Overall the defense did its job on Saturday but it was a close game and if Pitt had made one more play etc., that result could have been different. The same goes for most of our close losses too to be fair.
