Negatives
DB play was about as bad as I've seen. Reminded me of the Wisconsin Orange Bowl game. Made Howell look like Joe Montana.
Kicking game is struggling. Not just on him though. Getting the XP blocked only adds to confidence loss.
DL.......Obviously not as disruptive as last year. Seems like our 2nd team gets more pressure than starters.
LB...... @gferman is Macloud hurt? Havent seen much of him on the field. The other two are ok. Finley is the best of the bunch.
Punting. Hedley 3 punts 45 yd avg with one going 49. Looks like that problem is solved
WR - Did great all night catching the ball until the Hightower (pretty sure it was him) drop. I dont think u can hit JT with the drop on the deep ball.....looked like his left arm was pinned by the DB (no flag of course)
TE - Jordan = All American....he is elite talent. This is what Gary talks about elite. He is trouble for a defense no matter what they do. National championship teams have 6 or 7 guys like that. Mallory nice TD, then drops the 2 pt conv.
OL Big steps forward. The 5 are starting to come together. A couple of errors here or there but for a front 5 that should be together again next year things do look promising. Over these next 5 games I want to see them establish an identity. If they can run the ball consistently over the next 3 games against P5 teams (BC & CMU dont count) I think we might be onto something.
QB Williams is a distributor. He doesn't need to throw many deep balls, 2-3 a game, to keep a D honest. As he gets more comfortable I look for more crossing routes, slants, etc. Get the ball into our receivers hands on the run. Just a matter of time until JT or Harley breaks a slant for 80. Yes we are 0-2. But when was the last time we had a QB against 2 power 5 defenses that completed 70% of his passes for 250 a game and has yet to make a mistake. Take away the drops from the 2 games and you can add another 50 yds a TD a 2 pt conv and a couple of 1st downs at critical times. He is a RS freshman playing on the field with 6-8 fresmen and sophomores at any time. Our O is doing better than we think.
RB Deejay and Cam. Fully expect Deejay to go over 1k and Cam hit about 600-800. Slowly roll Lingard in. Our RB room is good but is 1 injury away from just ok. Need to land another to go with Chaney.
Big issue again with penalties. As with all Miami teams we never seem to win the penalty battle. Whether it was Scaifes phantom hold when he put his guy on the ground or the lack of holding calls on their o line......Ford literally had an arm around his chest while pressuring the QB with the official looking right at it. We even had a defensive holding on a d lineman on a running play. I have to go back and find that. Ive watched football for about 40 years and dont think Ive ever seen that call. Throw in the JT drop where he had his arm pinned. All that said if you're Miami you have to know its coming and play that much harder.
We have 2 weeks coming up to pad stats, work on play sets and further develop continuity. By VT hopefully Lingard and Bolden are both on the field and Nesta not much behind them. We will know by the end of the VT game if we are a 10-2/9-3 or 7-5/6-6 team.
