Let's try a new thread. The sitution is what it is now. Unfortunately it does not appear that any kind of good ending is going to happen. It looks like Russia will slowly and brutally take over Ukraine. WW1 & WW2 brought into our living rooms. Everyone has said control of Ukraine will be hell to the Russians. It will. So the horror slows a bit, but it still remains. Ukraine is a completely hollowed mess. But the Russians will be sending body bags of teen age boys home. NATO is not going to attack Russia, Russia won't go further and the country of Ukraine will have been mutually sacrificed so both sides can claim victory. But the area will remain in a cold to warm war. NATO could easily take back Ukraine, but they won't out of fear of Putin shooting nukes. And he would if he felt the walls were closing in. That is the problem. Putin is not going to surrender himself to the UN.

So what are the best feasible options now? Let's see if we can try to keep this thread somewhat on subject. At this point Hunter and Trump will have nothing to do with a solution. Strong disagreements and debate are interesting. A little parody and sarcasm is also good. Obviously we are not going to change anything, but let's try some essays based upon where things are today, not what should have been done years ago.

IMO, it is in the best interest of Ukraine to live to fight another day. The US and NATO are not going to establish a no fly zone. They are not going to send in troops. The time has passed for establishing high end anti aircraft and missile defenses. The Russians know what roads weapons will come in on and destroy most equipment before it gets into Ukrainian hands. They will shoot down Ukrainian planes coming from other countries. We risk having US/NATO "advisors killed when setting up or training Ukraine. What happens when body bags with "advisors" come back to US soil? The Ukrainians are fighting bravely but they are outmanned and outgunned. Russia controls the sky's and the water. The US media and political class love to cheer the brave Ukrainian fight from their comfy dens in Georgetown and Manhattan. But Ukraine is not going to win in March 2022. Why not save Ukrainian lives and not have the cities leveled into Syria style dust? Get Zalensky and those that would be in danger of Russian reprisals out. Lt them set up a government in exile.

Start with an attempt to give Putin eastern Ukraine and some of the South. Try to keep Kiev and Ukraine proper separate under a Russian approved Ukrainian government. Not unlike much of Ukraine's recent history. Yes it is horrible for Ukraine to temporarily live under a puppet government. But is being bombed into oblivion without, food, power or fresh water a better option? I do believe that there are enough historic ties between the slavic people that there will not be genocide. And I am sure there will be a "resistance" that will make Russia's stay miserable. I do not see Putin going further. He knows his army was highly over rated. He will attempt to fix that before he attempts any other mischief.

By doing this Putin is forced to continue to have to arm and feed an army that is not happy about the mission. Many Russian's feel they are fighting their brothers. This allows the sanctions to begin to take hold. Short term Putin does not care if an Oligarchs wife can not have a Louie bag on the store shelves. But when sanctions ultimately affect everyday life, especially the military, then things will change. Inside of Russia, people in power will hopefully see that there is a better way than being an international pariah state.

Now to the hard part. Keeping Putin in power is Russia's sale of raw materials. Energy in particular. The current European sanctions are swiss cheese. Russia will ship oil and get paid. Germany is not going to put its economy in a summer (and ongoing) recession by attempting to get by with half of the energy it needs. The real solution is for the US and others to immediately increase fossil fuel production. That is what works today. Europe can create more energy. They also have anti fracking laws in place. But the US can rapidly scale up to make ourselves and Europe no longer need Russian oil. That is the ultimate sanction. So does Biden make the obviously right choice? Go back to Trump energy policies and even put them on steroids. Operation Warp Drive! Cripple Putin's cash cow ultimately have Russia so weak or having a regime change to free Ukraine and reduce US inflation. Or does he continue to cower to AOC, Nancy Pelosi, Greta Thunberg and the green weenies? Is WW3 and millions of Ukrainian lives worth Biden keeping ridiculous promises to the radical left?

JMO. What do others think are plausible solutions from where things are today?

Wow, really well thought out post with legit points that have to be taken. My biggest thing is it’s going to be like the situation with Isreal. Putin won’t stop till he has it all. He’ll “compromise” by stopping every now and then and take breaks so that everyone can say they won, then just start up again. He’s not going to stop till he get’s what he wants and that’s the old soviet union. Putin is a bad actor with bad things in mind. It’s not like if he get’s his way he’ll just be happy and let the world go on peacefully. This guy has to be stopped. Longer we wait, the more lives will be lost. It’s not like we haven’t seen this in the history books a million times over. Just imagine if the west stopped germany the second hitler went into a neighboring country. No world war 2 millions of lives saved. As bad as things are can’t kick the can down the road because it could be worse. Evils exist when good sees to act. We could all be speaking German right now for those of us that would still be alive if countries didn’t make the ultimate sacrifice. No compromise.

say what you want about putin but he’s not about to get into a nucks war with the world. He’s not kim crazy. The guys a strategist, business guy, bully, coward. He’ll take what he can get so long as the worlds willing to give it to him. Think of a bully taking a kids lunch money. The bully stops when the bullied’s big brother makes an appearance and says move along to the bully. Getting into a nukes war won’t get him any where but blown off the face of the planet along with his legacy. That’s not what he wants. I’ll say it again. That is not what he wants. Again he’s just a bully that’s going to take what he can get until it’s not in his best interest.

as it stands, he’s alive and the leader of a powerful country. He needs to be sent a message to let good enough be. Trump sent that message to crazy kim. The world needs to send that message to putin before it’s a world problem and not just a ukrain problem. Also jmo. What do I know though, I’m just a restaurant guy typing to you on a college football message board lol. That being said, I think that still makes me more qualified than joe biden and harris.

moral of the story is putin is a bully and bully’s are pussies. They’re afraid of legit fights. They pick on people that can’t fight back because they can’t fight people that can fight back and thus have a complex that they over compensate for by picking on the week.

Guys, the better solution would be for Ukraine to push Russia out of Ukraine. They are outmanned but with more weapons can give Russia an out. Putin will leave when he gets pushed out and that's the only way.

The world has sent a message in the form of sanctions. When they begin to take effect, the people in Moscow and the oligarchs will turn on Putin and he will be struggling to stay in power, Further invasions will not be tolerated.

Mike, I agree with you this time. To your point, Russia has already reached out to China for money. Supposedly, Russia will be reported out of money by the end of this month, essentially bankrupt. Can't run a war without money. If the Chinese support Russia with assistance then they are complicit to the destruction of Ukraine.

Not going to happen.

Sanctions are a joke when they don’t kick in till later and countries like ours are still buying oil from them and china is still financially backing them.

17 well thought out
I agree wholeheartedly
I’m not sure that we will be able to convince the left and Europe to ramp up fossil fuel production as a long term approach to Putin
My own take can be summarized as follows
1) diplomatic actions are needed , rather than talk of increased weaponry
2) Russia/Putin will not be defeated in this military action to the point of retreat . They will simply ramp up the rockets and artillery
3) the more we urge Ukraine to fight , the more innocent Ukrainians will die
4) the strategy of hope regarding a coup in Russia is ridiculous. As stated many times- Hope is not a strategy
5) the analogy to Hitler/ Nazi Germany is misplaced. I don’t see Putin invading Poland or any NATO country. That would be suicide. He would be met with tremendous conventional military force that could overpower his military,

To save lives it seems to me that certain concessions are needed. Apparently the NATO issue has been conceded

Next , Crimea is Russian. That’s the fact
Third, the boundaries of the contested regions in the East need to be re- established . Everyone needs to walk away with some sort of victory.
I don’t see a Ukrainian military victory in the future. Maybe a stand off resulting in 10’s of thousands of lives gone

Lastly and perhaps most importantly , the sanctions imposed need to be gradually lifted upon resolution of the current situation. Hating Russia and impoverishing its people on a long term basis will only create hostility which could end very badly for everyone. Hitler rose to power as a result of crippling sanctions levied on Germany after WW1. That’s a main reason why he was able to convince the Germans that his form of Nationalism was a good thing.
All this flag waving and push for revenge/punishment isn’t going to save lives or improve the prospects for world peace. It’s a very dangerous game being played regarding punishing sanctions. Pushed far enough the Russian bear may strike back

Trump was right when he said “ getting along with Russia is a good thing “ , so long as it’s from a position of strength.

Try to stay current. Russian banks are already near collapse, their currency is near worthless versus the U.S. Dollar and we no longer are buying their oil.

No but India is and so will other nations that need it . Don’t forget oil is in the high 90$ a barrel range Russia can sell oil a lot cheaper than that and still make huge profit.
In the USA if oil drops below 40 it’s not profitable for us because our cost are higher and we have strict regulations. Not Russia they make big money on 60 $ a barrel. If you don’t think they can keep selling it your foolish. A lot of countries are struggling cheaper oil overrides morale obligations in a lot of the world’s leaders mind .
The best solution is to publicly encourage and change policies on fossil fuel production across the board and signal an major increase in supply to calm the oil market and future demand. Oil is priced on a long term assessment of market forces

Pakistan has a deal too
There are 220 million Paki’s
A billion Indians
That’s a lot of people needing oil and gas
They ain’t buying Tesla’s either

If you think Russia will not overcome this or that they care about difficult times you are sorely mistaken.

So true. The Russian economy is not based upon consumer goods, it is based upon sale of natural resources. The world is going to buy oil in one currency or another. Same with wheat of which Russia exports. As long as Putin can keep his citizens fed and having electrical power there will be no widespread rovolts. There will not be a Russian coup because of the lack of new Mercedes and Chanel bags,

This whole concept of destroying the Russian economy and punishing the Russian people is very short sighted in my view . Will it result in regime change in Russia? Probably not .

Or will it just cement Putin’s grip on Russia and infuriate the Russian population, like the German population was infuriated after WW1 . More likely.

The drumbeats of war continue to get louder. The contest now is who can hate Putin the most
The noise about a non fly zone is also getting louder. How this gets implemented is scary. Does Russia go after the air bases housing the fighter jets enforcing the no fly zone ?

The restraints have been removed
Biden is on record with claiming that Putin is a war criminal. How do we go forward with our relationship with Russia after this war is resolved. Do we demand the arrest and imprisonment of Putin, Larov , etc
Refuse to talk with them ?
Are we going to live on the edge where the rockets are locked and loaded with Nukes are pointed at each other at a a defcon level 2 or 3?

Does anyone believe that if Putin felt externally in danger of losing his grip on Russia or being arrested and tried as a war criminal that he wouldn't fire a few of his 5,977 nukes?
A lot of politicians talking military tough right now. That does not usually end well.

The situation has continued to evolve. Russia's military capacity has eroded beyond the point at which victory was possible. Russia is 24-72 hours away from having completely exhausted the resources needed for continuing the current invasion. Hard to know what the end game will be or how long it will take to get there. I'm hoping for an icepick to the skull. Probably will be a much darker sequence though.

You are believing the propaganda coming from our side .
Russia is Not 2 or 3 days away from anything
They will just level the country
It will get resolved only when certain concessions are made , over the objections of certain western groups who may like to insist that no territorial concessions be made .
Putin is not going to withdraw
Win ? What exactly does that mean for either side ? It’s not a definable term
Negotiations need to be had . Certain concessions need to be made , including territorial ones . Enforceable neutrality.
That’s what had to focused on in my view , not escalating weapon provisions to Ukraine.
Do we appease bullies? Sometimes you have to

I get information from a wide variety of sources and only consume propaganda for its ability sometimes to give insight about what the people making it have on their mind. I absolutely promise you that I have accurately described the state of Russian military capacity to continue the invasion. There will be a significant transition in their operations very soon as a result. It may already have begun. Ranged attacks for spite and attrition are definitely one possibility of what is transitioned to as an interim. I dont think anyone knows fully right now. I did not say Putin would withdraw. I think there is extremely low chance of that happening. Win is being defined for Russia as achieving the strategic objectives of the invasion. For Ukraine winning is not losing. That is speaking in pure strategic terms of course. The possibility of a human level win ended the moment the first tanks and soldiers crossed over from Belarus. Negotiations are ongoing as I understand it. It doesnt seem like the Russian negotiators know what they are empowered to do or even what they are trying to accomplish. Disconnect with Kremlin. We cannot tell Ukraine what conditions it must or must not accept in any negotiation. That is a hard no and you should rethink your position on that. If they want to concede territory to achieve peace, that is their call. If they want to continue the fight and give not a single inch, that is their call. But we must and will continue to support them as best as we can either way without allowing for any direct military engagements.
