Last night my pregnant wife, my 2 1/2 year old daughter, and Mom flew home from JFK to Tampa on JetBlue. My Daughter is undergoing a series of surgery's in NYC, and we make this trip often. However, last night prior to boarding, I noticed Vinny (wearing a UM shirt) standing alone at the gate. Being an Alum of 03' and crazy fan like all on this board, I couldn't pass this moment up while my family was in the bathroom. We spoke for 10 minutes about the current state of the team and direction of where we are headed (all of which he said is extremely positive and it's a great time to be Cane!). We also spoke about his family (while I introduced him to mine), and he said his son is happy to be Cane and looking to contribute anyway he can in the coming years.
Not only was he engaging and allowed me to pick his brain for a bit, he then walked with us and helped us carry multiple bags on board. It then just so happened that we were in the same row (the 4 in my family split on 2 sides of the aisle), and he gracisiously switched seats so I could sit with my daughter! He was genuinely concerned with my her health, and wished us the best!
I live in South Tampa, and have a number of mutual friends who know him and they have always said great things about him. After a rough 36 hours in NYC, meeting and speaking with a legend like that was an experience I needed at that moment! However, they way he helped us last evening really set him apart, and he was truly an incredible man in all aspects!
I wish Vinny Jr. all the best at UM!
GO CANES!
