Congrats to the Cavs who beat Vandy 4-2 Wednesday night to claim the national title, the ACC's first since Wake did it in 1955.
Not only did UVA barely get into the ACC tournament (where they were bounced by the Canes), but the NCAA post-season too. They knocked off a very good Maryland team, who had just eliminated top seed UCLA, by coming from behind in both wins scoring deciding runs in the 8th and/or 9th innings.
Then they come to Omaha where, along with Vandy (another unseeded team,) they were both picked by Bovada to finish last in the odds sweepstakes at 14-1. It didn't matter. They stayed hot and played their way into the championship's three-game series.
Even though UVA lost the first game of that series, they defied the odds makers, media experts and the defending champs, to come back and win two straight and win it all. And again, as I noted in previous posts, they did it with pitching, shutting down the 'Dores' potent offense. Oh yeah, they also had some timely hitting.
On the other side, after winning Game 1 by a score of 5-1, they were shut out in Game 2 and held to just 2 runs in Game 3. In those last 2 games at the plate, Vandy was only 1-18 with runners in scoring position and 2-19 with 2 outs. Their vaunted lineup was neutralized by Virginia's pitching staff.
The ACC sent only 2 teams to Omaha this year and our Canes was the other team. Meanwhile, the SEC placed 4 teams in the 8 team field and they come away without a title. They odds may have been in their favor, but Virginia was in their way.
Mark your calendars, Caniacs, Not only will the Canes host the Gates at The light next year, but most likely, the 2015 CWS National Champions as well.
What a great story and what a great night to be in the ACC.
Go Canes!
