After about a 5 year hiatus, I intend to bring back "Wednesday = Stat Day"...
Out of our 12 regular season games, WE scored FIRST in the 1st Quarter 10 out of 12 games, AND- in those 10 games, WE outscored our opponents in the 1st Quarter too! The ONLY TWO games in which our OPPONENTS scored FIRST in the 1st Quarter was the FIRST GAME in which we LOST @ Louisville, and our LAST GAME in which we LOST @ Pitt...
So, for a TEN GAME STRETCH, we were 10-0 in: (1) scoring first in the 1st Quarter; and (2) outscoring our opponents in the 1st Quarter... This INCLUDES the games against Nebraska, Georgia Tech, AND Florida State, games in which we all lost... Summed up, The U was 0-2 when our OPPONENTS scored first in the 1st Quarter, and The U was 6-4 when scoring first in the 1st Quarter (losses in this situation came against Nebraska, Georgia Tech, Florida State, and Virginia)...
Looking at most of these games again with a closer lens, we CLEARLY had the lead EARLY in these above referenced games, and the DEFENSE failed to "hold the line" and get the necessary stops more often than not. THAT SAID, the box scores and actual games also reflect an INABILITY for our OFFENSE to ADJUST at halftime once our OPPONENTS adjusted to US! Overall, the entire team under Golden CONSISTENTLY FAILED at FINISHING GAMES- no better evidence of that was against Florida State..
So, in summary, despite the massive defensive failures which we have seen under Golden, it is clear that ALL ASPECTS of the football team HAVE to significantly improve at a CONSISTENT level in order for us to have any realistic chance of winning both a Coastal Division and ACC Conference Title.
