University of Miami head women’s basketball coach Katie Meier announced Tuesday the team’s non-conference schedule for the upcoming season.
The Hurricanes have 11 contests before league play begins, including nine at the Watsco Center. Miami begins action against Jackson State (Nov. 10) and faces potentially two teams, Oregon State and possibly DePaul, in espnW’s Way-Too-Early Top 25, as well as another, Indiana, that just missed the cut.
“Our non-conference schedule is really balanced. It will test us early and provide a lot of opportunities for our awesome fans to see us play at home,” Meier said. “As great as the ACC is, we choose to play other power leagues during non-conference competition. We have two Pac-12 teams, a Big Ten team and potentially a BIG EAST team on our schedule, as well as other teams that finished at the top of their conferences.”
After its meeting with Jackson State to begin the campaign, Miami faces North Florida (Nov. 13) and IUPUI (Nov. 17) to cap its season-opening three-game homestand. The former features the return of Darrick Gibbs, who served as Meier’s assistant at Miami for 10 years before taking over as the head coach of the Ospreys.
The Hurricanes head to Chicago for their lone non-conference road trip, squaring off with North Carolina A&T (Nov. 22) and then either homestanding DePaul or Arkansas State (Nov. 23) in the Maggie Dixon Classic. The Blue Demons have made the NCAA Tournament each of the past 17 years, reaching the Sweet 16 four times, and check in at No. 20 on the aforementioned espnW preseason list.
After returning to Coral Gables, the Hurricanes welcome Liberty, Miami (OH) and Oregon State to town for the Miami Thanksgiving Classic. Meier’s team meets the Beavers (Nov. 29) on the first day of action and the RedHawks (Nov. 30) on the second.
Oregon State has reached the Sweet 16 in each of the past four years, twice advancing to the Elite Eight and once to the Final Four. The Beavers are ranked sixth on espnW’s early list.
Up next for the Hurricanes is the Big Ten/ACC Challenge against Indiana (Dec. 4) in a matchup of teams that reached the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 last year. Both programs are among the five that just missed the espnW top-25 list.
After an outing against Binghamton (Dec. 17), the Hurricanes will host UNC Asheville, Southern and Washington State for the Miami Holiday Tournament. On the first day, the Hurricanes play the Bulldogs (Dec. 20) and they will then meet the Cougars (Dec. 21) the following day to cap non-conference play.
Game times and television network designations for Miami’s non-conference schedule are yet to be determined and will be released at a later date.
