First off, I think just about everyone would agree that he appeared to have the highest upside of the LB trio after their first year. He was the most explosive imo and flashed the most athletic ability. So his lack of development has been a disappointment to say the least. Secondly, he has been out/limited this spring with the wrist/hand injury or whatever it is. If it lingers into the season, that's one good reason for a redshirt. Third, his playing time has been heavily reduced anyway with the implementation of the striker position. Lastly, it's a fact that he is just simply behind Shaq and Pinckney just in general as a player. Redshirt him this season, get him healthy, let him learn and get better physically, then he steps in the spot Pinckney will vacate after this season.
I know we aren't exactly loaded at LB this season so it's not like we can afford to not have him this season. But he would be more impactful in 2020 once the two big dogs leave. I say this all as a legit idea but I honestly wouldn't expect him to be on board with it. He came in as part of the trio and would probably want to go out that way as well. Unless the injury is a real issue this season then maybe he'd really consider it, and/or if Diaz and crew could convince him that this would be better for him long-term.
