A quick primer on Socialism for the board...

...since the term gets thrown around so loosely here, and with little to no understanding of what it actually is, I thought I'd post a simple definition and list of countries that are actually socialist:

Socialism is...

a way of organizing a society in which major industries are owned and controlled by the government rather than by individual people and companies

Current socialist countries...

Marxist-Leninist socialist countries:

China
Cuba
Lao
Vietnam

Non-Marxist-Leninist:

Bangladesh
Guayana
India
North Korea
Portugal
Sri Lanka
Tanzania

These are the countries that actually employ a socialist doctrine and system. Now there are many countries, almost all of which are representative democracies that have government controlled services. But this does not make them socialist countries. They still have free enterprise and allow for the pursuit of capitalism.

A lot of people want to call Frenk a socialist. This is simply absurd. You can dislike universal healthcare, but it does not make a country socialist. The UK is not a socialist country. Nor is Canada. Neither is Mexico. If anything, Mexico is much closer to being an oligarchy.
