I like the idea of kids having the freedom that make money and also to transfer but not at the expense of hurting college football. I think that's the direction this is going.
One idea that I've only half thought through is the length of the scholarship offer. I'll lay out my thinking and then let you folks who are smarter than me weigh in on the topic.
What about schools deciding to offer multi-year scholarships instead of the one year renewables? If a kid accepted say a 3 year full ride then that kid would be committed (a word nobody seems to understand) to the school for 3 years. In that case, the rule would be no portal for that kid until year three.
The schools could offer 1, 2, 3 etc. year deals and lock a kid in for that time period.
Of course the benefit to the school is no worry about the portal. The benefit to the kid is comfort.
The negative to the school is they can't just "cut" a player until his contract runs out. Same for the player basically.
