Hello, Baseball Caniacs...
“At the end of the day this team has not been consistent, that’s the bottom line. We’ve been inconsistent and if we continue to be inconsistent, it won’t be a long stretch for us."
Coach Gino DiMare
No need to wallow in what happened last weekend at BC. Coach G's statement is pretty obvious. However, we remain fourth with every team except Duke in the running as everyone is beating each other up.
We host App State this weekend in a non-conference series and then we end the regular season at home vs Georgia Tech, host FAU in a midweek game, and then hit the road for Louisville.
We all know what's at stake.
In the meantime, below U will find the latest Coastal standings (column 2 is what matters) plus info on our RPI, SOS, and news about the post-season. Full disclosure, I subscribe to D1Baseball.com, therefore I provide some of their content.
Enjoy!

D1Baseball.com's Projected Field of 64 (May 4)
Last week, D1Baseball and Baseball America both sent us to the Starkville, MS region hosted by Mississippi St. (No. 4 national seed) where we were either the No. 2 or No. 3 regional seed. They have Notre Dame (5), Pittsburgh (15) as ACC regional hosts, there are six SEC hosts, three teams in Texas and three schools out West,
This week, D1Baseball moved us to Austin, TX hosted by the Texas Longhorns (No. 8 national seed) as the No. 3 seed along with No. 2 Michigan and No. 4 Stony Brook. Didn't Stony Brook come to The Light 3-4 years ago and knock us out of our own region? BA has us going to Charlotte, the No. 16 hosts along with No. 2 South Carolina, No. 3 Miami, and No. 4 Connecticut.
From D1Baseball.com:
Our updated bids by conference: ACC* (9), SEC (8), Pac 12 (6), Big 12 (5), Conference USA (4), Big Ten (4), American (2), WCC (2), Missouri Valley (2), Big West (2).
*Clemson, FSU, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, Notre Dame, NCST, Pitt, Virginia Tech
FIRST FIVE OUT:
Maryland, Georgia Southern, Rutgers, Virginia, Kentucky
LAST FIVE IN:
Oklahoma State, Georgia, Iowa, Tulane, San Diego
Their top eight seeds to host a super-regional: Arkansas, Vandy, TCU, Miss. St., Notre Dame, Arizona, Tennessee, and Texas.
One Man's Opinion
Aaron Fitt of D1Baseball.com said this about Clemson sweeping top-tier Louisville last weekend in SC and the ACC in general:
"Feels to me like there's just not a lot of big-time pitching in the ACC, and that's the biggest reason everybody is beating up on each other. Clemson is suddenly in very good shape again at 15-12 in the league; I've been saying all along that any team that goes .500 in a 36-game ACC grind should be safe (to make the post-season).
The Canes are currently 15-14 with 6 conference games remaining + the tournament. To that end, Fitt also said a team looking to make the post-season can't afford to fold down the stretch:
" I will say that losing the last three series could undermine that "going .500 should be enough" theory because the committee does look at momentum over the final 15 games, and losing the last three series would not be a good idea."
What that tells me is what many of us already know. If we lose our two remaining conference series at home to GT and at Louisville, short of making an impressive run in the tournament, I think we can kiss goodbye to the post-season. Now, I haven't even mentioned the App State series this weekend at The Light. We absolutely, positively have to win at least 2 games if not all three. We also have a midweek game at home to FAU between GT and UL. We're walking a tightrope and U know what happens if U slip.
NCAA TO ANNOUNCE 20 POTENTIAL HOST SITES
This is big stuff saved for last.
Next week (Thursday or Friday), the NCAA is scheduled to announce 20 possible collegiate sites to host post-season regionals and super regionals. My guess is, to some degree, these were the top bids that were submitted to the NCAA and Miami is among the schools that submitted a bid (I assume more than 20 were submitted.) From those 20 schools, 16 will be selected as regional sites. For those of U who follow the sport, U already know the top 8 teams in the rankings will be named super-regional hosts. If they win their region they automatically stay home for round two. The eight super regional winners will advance to Omaha for the College World Series next month.
If we were in a pandemic-free season, the announcement would be made around the time of the conference tournaments but thanks to COVID, sites are being allowed additional time to prepare as health rules vary from state to state.
Here's a potential rub: UM/Coral Gables could be selected as one of the 16. But it's possible that we may not host. Why? If we flatline between now and the ACC tournament, we could be out altogether and some other team would be named to host at The Light. Wouldn't that be a kick in the pants? Another possibility is the committee could send us to another region (why do that?). Couldn't they keep us home and make us the No.2, 3 or 4 seed? I don't know the answer.
Well, Caniacs...that's all I have for this week. Let's hope we take care of business this weekend. Just a heads up: I seriously doubt I'm covering all three-weekend games. I may do Friday and leave Games 2 and 3 to someone else (Cane50 and honey?) I hope to cover GT and Louisville.
It's great to be...
Go Canes!
