SMU is 20-5 in its last 25 games. We play in a mid-major Conference (AAC), but it is indisputably the best mid-major Conference in the country and consistently has teams ranked in the top-25 (Cincinatti, Memphis, SMU, Navy, UCF) and sends 6-9 teams to bowl games.
Think about Miami's coaching staffs last 1-3 years versus SMU's coaching staffs last 1-3 years:
- HC, Sonny Dykes: coached Jared Goff at Cal who broke Cal's passing records and went on to be the #1 Overall Draft Pick. Recruited (along with Rhett Lashlee) Shane Beuchele who threw for 4,000 yards and 35 TDs his Junior year and is now in the NFL.
- DC, Jim Leavitt: his resume speaks for itself. What he did building USF is nothing short of a modern miracle.
- OC, Garrett Riley: Garrett Riley, younger brother of Lincoln Riley, who is considered in many football circles to be just as cerebral, dynamic, and innovative.
- (Former) OC, Rhett Lashlee: Semifinalist for the Broyles Award. Helped lead SMU to a 10-3 finish in 2019, with an offense ranked #7 in scoring (41.8 points per game), #13 in passing offense (309 yards per game), #9 in total offense (489.8 yards per game) and No. 12 in first downs gained (322). Our 10 wins were the school’s most since the 1984 season, and we logged 35 rushing touchdowns, setting a school record. #3 in plays per game, averaging 80.9. Shane Buechele threw for 4,000 yards and 35 TDs, 63% Completion %. RB Xavier "The X-Man" Jones rushed for 1,276 yards and 23 touchdowns, averaging 5.2 yards per carry. Buechele and Jones were first-team All-AAC selections. All of this with ONE STAR and TWO STAR OL.
- OL, A.J. Ricker: Spent two seasons (2014-2015) coaching the offensive line at his alma mater, Missouri, helping the Tigers to an SEC Eastern Division Title in 2014. Missouri registered 5,138 yards of total offense that season, including 2,648 passing yards and 2,490 rushing yards. Considered by many to be a top-25 OL coach in the country.
- ST, Kenny Perry- Perry coached 2020 American Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Year and Lou Groza Award Semifinalist Chris Nagger (17-of-21 field goals (81%, 1st AAC) and 43-of-46 PATs). Perry was also named the 2007 Dallas Morning News Coach of the Year and was a six-time selection as the Dallas Cowboys Coach of the Week.
So what's the point...? Obviously, 99% of you other than @TheLoki and 1-2 others don't give two shits about SMU Football. But here's what you SHOULD give a shit about - having coaches who are CULTURE CHANGERS and in doing so, DO MORE WITH LESS. How many of you would trade Miami's staff for SMU's staff (except for maybe T-Rob)...? or Iowa/Iowa State...? Cinci...? Yet The U fails to hire CULTURE CHANGERS - used car salesmen, sons of politicians, and first time HCs are not culture changers.
Every week for the last 2-3 years I JUXTAPOSE watching my alma mater's coaching staff revive a Death Penalty program by doing more with less, with the support of a BOT, university president, and AD who actually TRY to field a competitive football program, versus the country club shit show of a Program that Miami's BOT, university President, and AD have allowed. Should NEVER be the case when you compare the historical pedigree between the 2 Programs.
That's my take after last night.
All this Q&A day-after talk is a gargantuan waste of time, because the same SYSTEMIC problems exist with this Program, unless and until we have a FULL NUCLEAR REBOOT.
