Maher is right that 80% of California water is used in agriculture. Like they are nationwide, Farmers are a decentralized and highly powerful political force. They back Republicans and lobby effectively for low priced water. In Cali, Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield is the epitome of a powerful Republican who protects farmers.
That said, the droughts in Western States present a serious danger. Fire season is here again. I’ve owned my current home since 2004 and this is by far the driest year during that period. My wife and I are already planning our possible escape destinations if fires and smoke invade our area again this year. Last year, the smoke from August-October extended from Vancouver to San Diego. No easy escape. Scary stuff.
