Let me start off by saying I was so pumped to have Enos on staff. I thought he was going to be the difference maker this season and maybe he still will be. I just listened to his press conference. He talks like a coach I want running the offense, but he didn't call the game like that.
He talked about Thomas being wide open so much. Of course we was. But Williams had guys in his face because we are starting two Freshmen at tackle. Everybody knew going in that was the problem. Why didn't he do more to help them out? The first series had short, quick passes. After that, too many long routes. Not enough chip blocking to help the tackles. Zion was getting beat because they lined up wide and the defensive end was just too quick. You have to put someone out there to help him.
At one point in the second half, Enos called a fake draw. Do you really think this line can hold their blocks long enough for Williams to drop back, look downfield, fake a draw and then throw the ball?
High expectations are great. But you need to deal with reality. I have expectations my newborn will be a great athlete, but he has to crawl and then walk first. Enos better give those tackles some help or Carolina is going to have a field day.
Finally, Gary asked the question I would have. Why was Martell in the game over so many of our talented wide receivers? Listen to his response. He didn't answer the question. “Tate had more snaps because of the packages that we were doing. The other guys are going to play as we feel we want to put our best guys on the field that can make plays. Three times in the first 10 plays Jeff Thomas is wide open and we don’t get him the ball for one reason or the other.”
Sorry, that isn't an answer. Go back and watch the game and you will see on one play Martell didn't even have his mouthpiece in at the snap. He knew the ball wasn't coming to him. He was nothing but a decoy setting up a trick play for later. That's a waste.
Going into that game, there was an article about Payton saying he expected to be a big play guy. He didn't see the field and Martell, who practiced a week at WR got 15 snaps. We are going to lose some talent at WR if he keeps screwing around using Martell as a decoy.
