Southern Miss is a FBS program that hung around for the first half with Miami. Fans baked at Hard Rock Stadium, and all of Hurricane nation were heated all over the world and were quite nervy as that occurred. The Hurricane's offense seemed to wake up in the second half and the combination of the running game and consistent defensive play gave Miami a total of three touchdowns and three field goals better than Southern Miss's one touchdown.
POSITIVES
The running game is Miami strong
Parrish, Thad, and Rooster will be formidable on the go-forward.
Parrish is your more consistent back to give you big chunks of yards. He is also your best pass-catching back.
Thad is your power runner who could be your every down back if needed, also can catch it out of the backfield.
And Rooster is your most explosive back.
Wait until Chaney comes back
Best Defensive Player Out, held Southern Miss to just one score
Akheem Mesidor was nicked up during the week according to Cristobal but should be back for Texas A&M game. Yet Miami was pretty lights out besides one-one blur moment given up by Malik Curtis.
Tyrique Stevenson, made big plays in this game. He set up the touchdown with a solid return and had an interception that probably should have been returned for a touchdown. Leonard Taylor was big on the stat sheet with a sack and tfl. Mulitple players contributed but Ivey and Flagg seemed to be attacked the most Saturday
Total yards given up went down from week one from 352 to 231 with an elevation in competition.
NEGATIVES
O-Line
Seem to go from elite to average real fast in the passing game. Canes gave up four sacks and TVD was hurried twice.
They knew the blitz was coming this week and still failed to protect TVD. Big plays make offensive lines look great. Which is what we really didn't see again in week 2 besides the flea flicker to Keyshawn. If that is true then this Saturday night is going to be jubilent for Canes fans.
Although I do think Gattis will unleash some gems this Saturday I think the philosophy will remain the same let the run set up the pass. I personally like the pass setting up the run.
Restrepo Was Missed In The First quarter
TVD never really got into a rhythm in that first half, and missed plenty of throws throughout the game. A 24-yarder to Restrepo got him going in the 2nd quarter but his interception intended for Redding put a hault to his momentum. X is a little banged up but will play against Texas A&M. Restrepo still finished as the leading catch getter (5) without playing in the first period.
Mallory no catches, seems to still not be 100%
Defense
Southern Miss out sacked 4-3 and out tackled for loss Miami 8-6.
Miami failed to win many jump balls. Miami needs to practice locating the football and getting their head turned around when the ball is in the air. Improving in this area would easily increase turnovers. Miami coaches have these boys in place to make plays, they just didn't make enough plays Saturday that they should have. And its those type of plays that have to be made in big games and against opponents that have equal or better talent, not Southern Miss.
