Gary, if they keep Manny, who is available next year?

@gferman

Most of us agree, including yourself, that we need to move on from Manny to get to the next level as we are nowhere close right now.

Help me understand how the possibility of keeping Manny if we cant land Mario/Kiffen makes sense.

I totally understand not wanting to make a kneejerk decision and hire another JAC in place of Manny.

I can rationalize that stance if there is a big name guy you can get the following year by waiting.

Please tell me what big name coach will be realistically available for us next year vs now.

We all know there aren't many coaches that fit that bill.

Lets recap

  1. Kelly, Riley and Napier (don't think he's elite but he's now unavailable) just got hired, so you can scratch them off the list.
  2. Whoever Notre Dame and OU hire can be scrubbed from being available next year.
  3. The schools that lose their coaches to OU and ND will also be making hires which pulls another two coaches out of contention.
  4. Franklin, Stoops and Tucker just signed extensions so they are not going to be available.
  5. If we cant land Mario or Kiffen, they will have signed extensions making them unavailable.
  6. Saban, Dabo, Jimbo, Smart, Day and maybe Harbaugh; no chance they leave those schools for Miami.
  7. Maybe Urban leaves Jacksonville, but I wouldn't expect him to come to Miami.

Doesn't appear that anyone who is a "needle mover" will be available by waiting. If that likely scenario plays out, we will have to look at the next tier of coaches that have significant risk. Wouldn't any of those guys be available now?

Unless they plan on keeping Manny long term, regardless of on field product, if Mario/Kiffen don't bite; why would you not get rid of him now? Its not realistic to think we can wait a year and get our unicorn, this has been the craziest off season for coaching changes, everyone will be locked up.

If we end up having to make another risky hire, why not just do it now if Mario and Kiffen are off the table? At least there is the possibility that it works, right now we know Manny isn't going to work. If you cant land the big name, you're going to have to rip off the Manny band aid eventually and take another gamble, why not now?

In theory it seems like the smart thing to do, but if you go down the list of elite/top level coaches, doesn't seem like any of them would be available next year. I don't see how keeping Manny around if you cant land Mario/Kiffen makes sense.

Please elaborate, and I am not accusing you of being ok with that scenario, just curious to hear your thoughts given how unlikely it seems to find a "needle mover" by waiting another year.
