That's not how it works. When you know that your coach is in demand, you don't wait until he accepts another position to make an offer. That is not smart negotiations. Knight does not need to gather his chips to make an offer. He has the money. This is just a rounding error to him to pay the coach's salary. A smart businessman like Knight would just lock up the coach before other people get to even offer him a position.
