Rapper's Threats On Behalf Of Collins Trouble Qb's Dad
UM FOOTBALL
April 1, 1995|By RANDALL MELL Staff Writer
CORAL GABLES - — The father of University of Miami quarterback Ryan Collins was troubled by 2 Live Crew rapper Luther Campbell's threat to cause the school to get the death penalty if Collins isn't named the starting quarterback.
Sam Collins said Campbell doesn't speak for the Collins family, and he wishes Campbell had not made the remarks attributed to him in Friday's Miami Herald.
"We don't support that," Sam Collins said. "I have no control over what Luther Campbell says. He said this on his own."
The elder Collins said he is troubled by the public furor Campbell's published remarks have caused.
"We don't want people to think we are trying to coerce the coach or have anything to do with forcing him into making a decision," Sam Collins said.
Campbell, who is a friend to several Hurricanes, including Collins, told the Miami Herald he will reveal damaging information about UM if Collins isn't named the starter. UM is investigating allegations that Campbell paid players for game-day performances, as much as $500 for a touchdown in a 1989 game against Notre Dame.
"If he were white, being from Miami, he'd be God's gift to America," Campbell said. "If they don't start Ryan Collins, the University of Miami will get the death penalty. I will tell all. I will tell everything I know to the NCAA. If he doesn't go out there for the first play versus UCLA, I'll give you all the violations from 1986 to last year. As of now, I don't know anything. I'm stupid. But if Ryan doesn't start, [coach) Butch [Davis) is going to wish he never took that job."
Collins, a fifth-year senior, is competing with sophomore Ryan Clement and freshman Scott Covington for the starter's job. Collins is black. Clement and Covington are white.
Campbell said there will be pickets at the Orange Bowl if Collins isn't the starter.
"We are not trying to cause trouble or make this a racial issue," Sam Collins said. "Our biggest concern now is that fans and the coaches may perceive Ryan as a troublemaker and a disruptive force on this team, and that's not the case.
"We want Ryan to win the job on merit. We think he's ahead of the pack and will win the job based on how he plays.
"We aren't looking to create any animosity. There are going to be 50,000 fans screaming in the Orange Bowl at games. We want them on our side. We don't want to separate or alienate the fans, or have them saying `Ryan can't do this, and Ryan can't do that.'''
Asked if he believed race was being made a factor in the quarterback competition, Sam Collins said: "No, not now. It seems fair to this point."
Ryan Collins did not seem to take Campbell's threats against UM seriously. He said he laughed when he read Campbell's statement.
"He's one of my biggest fans, I guess," Collins said. "For once, somebody's supporting me. That's unusual."
Davis says he won't be pressured into making a decision or base it on race.
"I told our coaches, and I told our players, the only thing we are focusing on is the practice we have and the opportunities we have to continue to get better," Davis said. "I think the players truly believe that there's a sense of honesty, and all of them are being given an equal opportunity to win jobs. That goes for all positions.
"I don't think [the article) affects the chemistry of this football team or the mindset that we approach practice with. Guys are excited by practice and that's all I ask them to do, just come out and work hard and give a great effort and the future will take care of itself."
-- UM's second full scrimmage begins at 10 a.m. today at Greentree Field. It's open to the public and admission is free. The 'Canes will work in 72 or more plays.
