If the plan is to play the best player, than that person right now is Perry. The coaches should take zero consideration into Jarren's feelings, or how benching him for UVA will "affect his confidence", or any of that nonense. This is big boy football... What about the other 50+ players, especially on offense, who want to win...?
Did Perry sulk, threaten to transfer, or rip the coaches last year when it obvious he was better than Rosier...? No, he cleaned up his act, worked hard in the off-season, and has proven himself to be the better option right now. Only at Miami can a QB throw 4 TDs, 400+ yards, in 3 Quarters, and not be given the starting job when that player is clearly the better fit for this offense. Talk about being stubborn...
And what's wrong with being benched...? Maybe it will help Jarren- helps build character and can be used as a teaching moment. And if Perry, struggles, then put Jarren back in as starter. You rotate and hold a true MERITOCRACY QB COMPETITION. What message are we sending by refusing to start Perry over Jarren- that the coaches would rather put their pride over the benefit of the team...?
Finally, who cares what Perry did last year against UVA...? So what he did last year means anything this year...? Are we to believe Enos is no better than Richt...? Things change from year to year. Should Dorsey have been benched against Washington in 2001 because of the road loss to Washington in 2000. It's an absurd, meritless argument.
Bottom line, these coaches are walking a fine line with potentially losing the locker room and the culture barely a half season in Year 1..... A sobering remidner of why, for several reasons, it is always risky to hire first-time head coaches, and mostly unproven coordinators/assistants.
