Michigan St has been one of the best defensive teams the last several years. They pretty much run the same defense that we ran from the late 80's to early 90's under jimmy/Butch and Erickson/tubbs. They have 3 guys that would be good options to run the defense down here.
1st option would be CO-DC Harlon Barnett. He now calls the plays for mich St even though he shares the tittle with another staff member. He has been with Dantonio ( and Narduzzi) since the Cincy days and their move to mich st. Before being promoted he was the secondary coach who coached several all Americans and all conference players including 2 1st rnd draft picks in denard and trey waynes.
2nd option would be the other CO-DC Mike Tressel. He too has been with dantonio and narduzzi since the Cincy days. He served as the linebackers and special teams coach for mich st. He too has coached numerous all Americans and all conference players as well as lead one of the best special teams units in college football.
Lastly is linebackers and special teams coach Mark Snyder. Mark was the linebacker coach at Ohio st when dantonio was the DC. After dantonio left to Cincy Mark was promoted to DC. He then left to be HC at Marshall and was let go after 5 season. He then went to south fla where he served as DC for Jim leavitt. South fla during that time had one of the best scoring defenses in college football. His teams were also tops in turnovers, sacks and yards allowed. He also was a top recruiter at south fla especially in the Tampa area. His success there prompted Sumlin to tab him as his second choice for DC after he struck out on bud foster. Even though his time at Texas A&M was not the best many felt a lot of the defenses failures at TAMU were not his fault.
Any of these 3 would be good options. My top choice would be Harlon though. Another option to consider would be LSU DB coach Corey Raymond. He has coached with and under some very good DCs he has also developed some very good DBs as well.
I think getting a college guy to be your DC is many times better than an NFL guy because of recruiting. Many NFL guys don't desire recruiting or know how. Maybe Richt lands a guys like Greg Schiano or maybe he lands another Grantham or schottenherimer. I just think the college route is better and offers some very good options.
