I really loved the energy of the fanbase in orlando this weekend. Manny is such a charismatic speaker and had already gone horse before the game even started.
I think Gary was almost spot on with his analysis of most positions.
QB- as frustrated as most of us were with both Nkosi's play on the field last year and his off the field antics, I truly believe our fan base will have to get behind him this year. He will be our starter. I was actually impressed on how he looked not only throwing the football but more importantly, keeping his eyes downfield looking to make a play. Last year, he would duck and cover after 2 seconds. Unfortunately, our OL is really going to put him in tough situations this year and his speed isn't as ideal as Tate's would be under center.
Tate is a great athlete that still needs alot of work throwing the football, but is remarkably better throwing from the shotgun. His footwork under center left alot of room for improvement but the OL stepping on him a few times in the scrimmage didnt help.
Jarren is solid but still think Nkosi's arm strength is actual better and Tate is faster. Think Jarren will end up third in this battle but all three have their strengths.
OL- think i said enough above. our qb's had NO time in the scrimmage even though i thought some of the DL and LB's were not even rushing hard and were going through the motions to not get hurt.
RB- we will be solid but not elite and they may get frustrated with the lack of holes by the OL. I am hoping alot of Enos playbook has not been shown to any of us but the players because the slow handoffs with this OL do not work
WR- we have a ton of depth and alot of quality slot guys. Our WR size is suspect and we need Njoku to play the way he looks. Great size but still a Work in Progress. We have to get all this shifty guys out in space.
TE- this TE group has the chance to be the best in UM history IMO. Mallery is the next shockey/olsen and if jordan comes back healthy, watch out. Additionally, i was impressed with Irvin Jr's hands as they were suspect last year.
Kicking- Bubba has a huge leg but better get more consistent. we cant be missing chip shots. As for punting, i hope our Australian stud is as good as advertised as Spicer kicking into the wind the other day was painful to watch. (Spicer did look much better with the wind though)
DL- they have no excuse, they look like they can be dominant, but they were going against our OL, so who knows.
DE- on paper they should dominate. time to turn that paper into reality.
LB- pray our 3 boys stay healthy
CB/S- as gary said, tough to tell. when our qb's had any time, there were breakdowns in coverage. hopefully our front seven can get to the Qb quickly. I think they will get better with more experience throughout the season.
All in All, I am happy no one got seriously injured in the spring game. I thought many of the guys played not to get hurt and went through the motions but it was great seeing the boys still having some fun.
The James "rudy" murphy pick was fun to watch. Jarren didnt deserve for that ball to get picked though. hopefully, the coaching staff will not hold that pick against him.
With that said, I cant wait for August 24th and while we may not be elite yet, i think we have the right team and leaders in place to make it happen in the very near future.
Let's Go Canes.
