So said Kyle Petersen, former Stanford AA pitcher, ESPN college baseball analyst and part owner of the Div1Baseball site. He made the bubble remarks during the LSU-Arkansas SEC title game in Hoover, AL.

31 teams get automatic bids. 33 receive at-large bids.

He mentioned that at least 3 ranked teams lost their conference title games Sunday. Plus, Okie St. knocked off Texas to win the Big 12.

And Rice didn't help the Canes either.

The Owls finished 31-29, hardly tourney material. But because they knocked off ranked Southern Miss for the C-USA title, they get the automatic bid while Southern Miss now gets an at-large bid (update: they were awarded one of the 16 regional sites).

This means the available slots for bubble teams have been greatly reduced and may minimize Miami's chances of getting picked by the committee.

We may still get in but if we are on the last four teams in as was being projected, the worst thing that could happen to us or any bubble team was upsets.

It's a double-whammy: teams that would not have been picked get the automatic bid for winning their conference titles while the teams they beat still get in because they are ranked and have the overall records to warrant selection.

We'll see what happens Monday at noon on ESPN2.

Go Canes!
