Stone Crabs

Money not being an object, what and why do you prefer Medium, Select, Large or Jumbo Stone Crabs?
Large / Jumbo or colossal nothing smaller. It's not the kind of crab where size changes taste. Its a hard shell crab and the pleasure of stone crabs is the ability to just slaughter that claw in big bites. Thats my opinion.

I find the Jumbo Crabs a bit too chewy. Prefer the large, but Stone Crabs are the bomb!
I don't think it's chewey its just a big bite. I don't need Jumbo either but the large have to be a valid size. I go crazy when I go to a stone crab place and they stick a plate of medium in my face and tell me they are large. I promptly inform them I'm not a tourist and have been eating stone crabs my whole life.

A friend of my dad used to bring by garbage bags full of them when I was in my teen years. Delicious but personally I prefer Key West Pink shrimp over the claws. Going to have some lobster and Pink's sent to Utah while our son is visiting from college during the Christmas season.

Just crushed some Jumbos from Joe's. 4 very nice size and fresh. Accompanied by Joe's Cole Slaw and Onion Rolls. Killer. I'll rest a bit before the Key Lime Pie.
Joe's Stone Crab is the greatest. I love the history of the place. Joe Weiss comes to Miami Beach over 100 years ago seeking better weather because of his asthma, and the rest is history...

I had lunch at Joe’s last Saturday while in Miami for a wedding. Shared onion rolls, conch fritters, sliced tomatoes with Joe’s vinaigrette, hash browns lyonnaise and large stone crabs. Being a wine guy from Cali, ordered a French Chablis with lunch. All delicious.

Got a slice of key lime pie to go!

IF you want to really eat FRESH stone crabs, go to the place where Joes gets them from...Keys Fisheries, in Marathon...doesn't get any fresher, and relatively cheap...eat them before they go on Joe's trucks, then processed and overpriced at Joes Restaurant.

The best part of this post is where you get to the end and say lunch, lol. That’s one hell of a lunch. God bless you.

Always amazes me how filling these claws are. You’d think I’d learn my lesson by now. I always order these as an app and am practically stuffed by dinner. On a side note, Joes actually has fried chicken for a pretty reasonable price that you wouldn’t expect and it’s awesome! I recently decided, I am a much bigger fan of crab in general than lobster. If you like lobster rolls, try a crab roll. If you like lobster bisque, try crab bisque. Steak and lobster? Crab and lobster. Crab wins out every time.

LOVE the roasted tomato with american cheese so simple yet they make it so great.

I was just going to write about that. The fried chicken is arguably the best in Miami and was $5.95 for half chicken for the longest time (decades) then $6.95 now $8.95 by contrast Joes in Chicago it is over $15.95 and all they hear up there is how cheap it is in Miami. They laugh if you mention it. It was put on the menu many decades ago as a dinner on the cheap. Remember, Miami is the South.

There really is nothing bad to eat there. Even the steaks are fantastic.

My recent trip to Miami had to be after October 15 for the stones . I also did get to visit my daughter, granddaughter , sister and attend the NCST game
But the crabs were the best
I went to an old stomping ground for me Captain Jim’s in North Miami , it used to owned by a rabid Cane fan , it still has real fresh seafood ( snapper, grouper , Dolphin) and the crabs are pretty fresh . The traffic , drama and crowds at Joe’s is a bit much . If anything I would go to their take out place , which really isn’t a pure take out
Oh I like large claws , but these days they try and pass off Mediums as large

Forgot to include the creamed spinach with garlic that we had....my wife’s favorite item on the menu!

The bread is always the best too. I know years ago they had used the same jewish deli for decades. Not sure if that's still the case.

Yes it is. The onions inside the bread were special and not commonly seen in restaurants.

Also, we were part of the first seating at 11:30am. I had forgotten that all the waiters are lined up vertically in formation to meet the guests. The Maitre D’ introduced us to our waiter (in tuxedo, of course) who then escorted us to our table. Awesome!

Such an experience going there. I've heard you need serious connections to be a waiter at Joes. When you consider the average ticket price and a constant turnover on tables, it's a hell of a good gig.
