Everyone wants to say it was all about the Orange Bowl and some are super superstitious and believed once we lost the Orange Bowl Miami would never be able to get that magic back. But the recipe has nothing to do with the stadium other than the visitors locker rooms were probably some of the worst ever which is a common theme in college football.
The real recipe has three main ingredients and they are:
1. Top shelf Coaches and staff that know Xs and Os mathups and prepare the team during the off season
2. Elite South Florida Recruits
3. Fans
The previous 3 coaches did not have an elite staff with Andrew Swassey and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or pancakes special. Nor did the coaches have a staff that could get our team ready to run plays that were based off of schemes and matchups (Patrick Nix and Turkey Titts).
As a result, the other three ingredients were completely lost as more and more Elite South Florida recruits started leaving and going to SEC schools and winning championships at LSU, Florida and Alabama and eventually FSU. To make matters worse, the fanbase had disappeared as the majority of Canes fans never attended the school but jumped on the bandwagon during one of the championship runs or during the 58 home game winning streak that local fans who never attended the school were treated to a cheaper but better ticket than going to watch the Dolphins.
For 15 years Miami lost both local and regional recruits and local and regional fans in the state of Florida to the other two teams that were winningchampionships until last year. The bottom line is the more youu recruit star athletes from local and regional schools within South Florida you automatically gain their fans and family especially if they do not have a college football team they root for.
