Nato has announced it is sending additional ships and fighter jets to existing bases in eastern Europe as well as putting extra troops on standby.

I think that Putin has a point in not wanting NATO up against his border and thus opposes Ukraine’s membership . Why would he allow a potential hostile entity to be within miles of his border? What if he starts bombing missile sites located in Ukraine if they became NATO members? Does that trigger section 5 requiring retaliation??

Crimea was taken without a shot because most people there welcomed the Russians, as they are ethnically Russian and speak Russian
The Donbass has been disputed for years , with a slight majority being Russian
