My opinion it hurts those it’s intended to help, and absolutely can devastate small businesses. Unfortunately good intentions sometimes can bring on unwanted consequences. Here’s an article on a few of Biden’s executive orders.

A large chunk of minimum wage workers are adults who live paycheck to paycheck, which means that keeping the minimum wage very low ensures that we retain a permanent underclass with very little upward mobility. Raising it to a livable wage will raise the quality of life for millions of people and help the economy since these people will have more disposable income to buy good and services.

Minimum wage is an entry level pay for people that have never worked before, have no skills or experience. It is not intended to be living wage at all.
It’s for teenagers in school or college that want some extra spending money,or non working spouse that wants to bring in extra money for the home, to supplement the main wage earner.
In order to attract employees, business have to pay way above the minimum wage age anyway.
Typical starting wage at McDonald’s is 10-12 an hour.Retaining reliable workers ( even unskilled)requires even higher wages.

Proponents of minimum wages are Socialists that do not believe in free market capitalism.
The free market should set the wages, not governments.

If raising minimum wage to $15/hour is such good idea, why not $25,he’ll why don’t we just raise it to$100,000/ year!

I have a heartfelt sympathy for those trying to make ends meet, but raising the minimum wage will hurt those it’s designed to help most. There will fewer of the entry level jobs for people to get in the workforce, particularly people without a high school education or less. The minimum wage was never meant to live off, it’s a way for people to get into the workforce.

Years ago I used one to supplement my income. A lot of you used one while you were going to school. You’ll not only take away jobs in the food service sector, but you’ll end up almost doubling the cost.

This should be a state decision. All regions have differing costs of living. Is the minimum wage intended to be a living wage?

Radical Raoul lying again. Show me where most adults are at minimum wage in their respective states who are not in their first job of their life.

That's the outdated stereotype that is usually pushed by older people, but that's not the reason the minimum wage exists. It was specifically put in place create a minimum standard of living to protect the health and well-being of employees. That means a liveable wage and $7.25 isn't a liveable wage anywhere. Otherwise you end up with a permanent class of poor people who get trapped in a cycle of debt, lack of education, crime, and general family dysfunction. I do like your idea of $25 an hour though.

You contradict yourself ,bravo.
In one sentence you claim the minimum wage was put in to protect the health and well being of employees, and in the next sentence you said $7.25 does not accomplish it.So then minimum wage set has not worked.OK got it.

BTW Obama had filibuster-proof senate(60 Dems) and Democratic house in 2009 and did not raise minimum wage.
Wonder why?

It obviously cant accomplish its objective at $7.25, which is why it should be doubled (at a minimum).

I don’t know why Obama or any of the other recent Presidents didn’t raise it, but Biden has a chance to do it now.

I don't disagree here but at the same time, my wife and I were able to buy our first home at 23 years of age. We weren't at minimum but not far ahead of it and were still able to afford a home. My kids are making decent money and yet it takes 2 or 3 of their friends to be able to afford even an apartment. What exactly has changed to make it this way and what can we do to give the younger generation hope that they will get the same opportunity that we had?

What's changed is that wages have not kept up with home price growth, at a time when the cost of other necessary things people need - like healthcare, education, childcare etc, are all exploding. This means that a young couple who get married in their early 20s today would face a much more difficult in buying a home and building a life for themselves, which more or less means that unless something is done, the American dream is on the ropes.

I’m definitely no expert, could be inflation , value of the dollar, taxes, or other factors I haven’t listed. I don’t think raising the minimum is the answer though, I think it hurts the very people it intended to help.

If you want to see all the people that minimum wage increase helps go looks at Walmart or McDonalds. More self-checkout and self ordering stations than people working the register and counter.

Minimum wage increases benefit $100k engineering and tech people who find ways to automate away human labor. Then big businesses pay the remaining workers a bit more, while having an overall lower payroll.

Meanwhile small business can’t afford to automate so they go out of business.

The minimum wage increases have been almost nil for twenty years.
It was not keeping pace with living standards.
It's going to be phased in anyway so I voted for it on the Florida vote.
Not sure what damage it will do to the number of jobs but to many adults have just been making to little money to survive.

That's key. $15/hr in Manhattan vs. Newnan GA. Say goodbye to the dollar menu at McDonald's.

$15 should be the federal baseline for all places across the country. Places like Manhattan and other high cost areas should go beyond that based on local need.

Radical Raoul has never owned a business and will be the first one crying when his McDonald’s Value Meal goes from $9 to $20, and then he will want an even higher min wage to pay for that Value Meal. Economics is not his forte.

A not so rosy picture regarding raising the minimum wage:

Im sure most big businesses would love the minimum wage increase, as stated above they just move to automation, and it wipes out small business competition.

Definitely more than one factor involved. The more give away's we have, the higher taxes have to go up, especially property taxes which makes real estate artificially high to pay for more services. Like I said before, CEO pay being 280x's what the average worker makes doesn't help either.

It won't matter since the wage increase will be passed on to the consumer effectively increasing the cost of goods. These minimum wage workers will still have nothing left at the end of the day. They will be paying , like everyone else , for the cost increase in goods and services. It will be a big circle jerk.

The companies will just have to adjust since the minimum wage has to go up to keep up with the cost of living.

Wages haven't kept up with cost of living for the lower end of the work force or most everyone else. Meanwhile Wal-Mart and McDonald's profit billions per year. How many billions need to be made before the minimum wage person gets an increase?

Healthcare is the same shit. Insurance companies make billions off the back of sick people.

Can't you comprehend that the wage increases will just be passed on to the consumer! It makes no difference. The low wage worker will not gain in the long run.

That's a trope that frequently gets repeated in conservative circles but its not born out in any research. In fact the latest research shows that there's only a 0.36% rise in costs for every 10% raise in the minimum wage, which is too small to have any tangible effect on consumers. So a 100% rise in the minimum wage from 7.50 to $15 would only result in a 3.6% rise in prices which is negligible relative to the benefit of boosting wages for 17 million people (according to the CBO). So at the end of the day a majority of research shows that there are strong earnings effects and no employment effects of minimum-wage increases.

Lol Wal-Mart is getting rich because they conned the shoppers into checking themselves out and getting rid of all the check-our staff..

That’s also why almost every McDonalds now has a self-service screen you order from instead of a real person.

Automation and self service kills minimum wage employees and this process is only expedited when these stupid policies are put into place.

Reality check.
I own a business with 40 employees. My partner and I are planning on cutting out insurance for employees to pay for it. We can’t raise prices and have to pay for it somehow. We don’t have to do it yet, but as the new rules start to effect us we’ll have to do it. Thats the unfortunate reality.
