If you go back and watch bama from last year, where were they exploited, lol if you can even call it that? mind you bama won the national title last year with one of the best rosters they’ve ever had and lost more players than we’ve pretty much seen under saban. They don’t win the national title every year albeit most. They do have some spots from time to time that get sort of exploited. This is no different if not more.
1) te’s, it seems like in general the teams that had a good te were able to get space and even first down’s in one on one coverage. Clearly their lb’s had zero issues with the run but it did seem at times that they sold out more than what you’d expect with so much talent. Malory/king.
2) their secondary really didn’t get it going other than surtain until the second half of the season and then trask picked them apart. Secondary has been an issue for bama on multiple occasions. I think they have new/better coaching there but still. We’re not talking about pope wiggins anymore. If our wr’s can be productive, this is an area that I think has to be concentrated on.
All though our talented rb’s will be an instrumental aspect of our game, i just don’t see us putting up 100 yards on the ground. When do you sacrifice the down to keep their lb’s and safety’s honest vs keeping them back for blocking or letting them hit a quick reception?
3) we do have some dudes in the secondary. Big plays will be huge and hard to come by but we need big plays from big time play makers. Despite my opinion that bama will try and basically do to us what wisconsin did the last time we played, the opportunities will be there. Turn overs are what could keep us in the game. Not so much a weakness for bama but an opportunity for us.
4) there’s no shame in your kicker being a weapon that you take advantage of. By all reports, we’re still safe here. If we can sink 3 fields goals and go 100% on extra points, that’s not nothing, not in this game.
5) switching the field. We all know our d isn’t going to be the strength of the team this year, to put it mildly. Pin those mother ****ers back to the other side of the field on every possession that our d has a chance and they can’t just punch it in on a five series drive every time. No shame in punting it when we get cold (it’ll happen) so long as the out come is some what respectable.
6) we don’t want to see king coming off injury running too much but it has to happen. Running to the flats never works against bama, ever. Designed plays though, different story. There’s either a hole or some one open most likely. Clearly our wr’s have to have at least have some success against their db’s (see 2) for this to work but if the light of day is there, king has to pick up that chunk.
7) confusion, I’ve heard time and time again from bama opponents that the trick to any kind of success against bama is making them think. Different formations on d could be huge here with them breaking in not so experienced ol. Gary said our dl is undersized going into this match up (shocker I know) but we do have some guys that are sorta quick and they should know what they’re doing at this point as they’re not inexperienced anymore.
8) trick plays are nothing to be ashamed of in a game like this. Obviously there’s a big risk vs reward factor here but face it, they’re better then us and we need these breaks. If we can pull it off, it’s worth it. What do we have to lose? The rewards far out way the risk. I really see saban and CO just trying to out execute us in this first game so I think if done right and executed properly, there will be plenty of opportunities for trick plays. Again, go back to 7) confusion.
9) please add
32-46 bama best case scenario imo if everything goes right. I just don’t see us stopping the run and them keeping our o off the field. They’re going to make their big plays too. Add to that our usual 100 yards in critical penalties at the worst times and a few turn overs from our end… it is what it is.
one thing that I will say is that I don’t see our players quitting in this first game like with lsu and I do see this bama team being closer to one of their play offs teams that didn’t go all the way as oppose to their ones that did.
for what it’s worth, I think we’re going to have a tougher time with clemson in the acc title game.
