Miami Spring Practice Day 2

This was our first look at OL Javion Cohen and he looked impressive, has quick feet and looks polished.

S Kamren Kinchens looked excellent in drills and will be on his way to another stellar season.

It's early but QB Jacurri Brown has seemed to improve in his accuracy based on what was seen in drills.

DB Kaleb Spencer seems to be one of the breakout freshman players thus far. Nice agility for his size.

Players weigh-in on new Miami offense

CanesCounty.com had a chance to speak to two receivers on the Miami roster and they are loving the new offense from implemented by new offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson. Tyle Van Dyke talked about the offense being free in post presser on Saturday and Cristobal talked about Dawson collaborating with the other position groups to help with execution.

One receiver mentioned that "he does a great job of teaching us stuff. We are already learning more than what we did last year."

Another receiver said "it's easy. We just go out there and make plays. It's "air raid" so it's going to be much better than last year."

That same receiver said there is a minimal installation of running plays.

"We have like four running plays and have way more passing plays."

In addition, a source close to the team mentioned that Jacolby George has really stepped up so far this spring and potentially could be WR2 after Colbie Young.

The consensus seems to also be overwhelmingly positive from new wide receivers Kevin Beard.

"I can just relate to him better and I know he's going to make me better."

Miami will take the field again on Tuesday for the second day of spring practice.

2024 Forecast in for Miami Target...

I placed a forecast for four-star WDE KingJoseph Edwards to Miami

The top 10 pass rusher has now been to Miami twice and hit it off with the staff better than any prospect during Junior Day. Heard his mom absolutely loved the visit and the relationship with Jason Taylor and Edwards is rapidly growing. I fully expect Edwards to commit to Miami and it is just a matter of when, not if, at this point

Coaching Staff Complete - Did Miami Get It Right?

Off-season additions:

OC/QB - Shannon Dawson
RB - Tim Harris Jr.
WR - Kevin Beard
DC - Lance Guidry
DE/OLB - Jason Taylor
ILB - Derek Nicholson

Dawson brings the long awaited Air Raid to Miami. Tim Harris is a Miami HOFer and South Florida native with strong recruiting pull. Beard is a known developer, already pushing for the top WRs in the area and opens several doors in recruiting in South Florida. Guidry is a mad scientist who is revered as one of the best teachers in college football. Jason Taylor gives the staff an NFL HOFer who has already made his presence felt with multiple elite pass rushing prospects since he arrived. Derek Nicholson is a young, motivating grinder who has proven himself as a recruiter and has a track record of several all-conference level linebackers on his resume.

Last year, Cristobal seemed to win the press conference with his fires. This group has the feel of more 'the right guys for the job' and not just based on name. Did the head man get the staff choices right going into year two?

March Recruiting Visits

The Junior Day on Saturday is going to be massive for recruiting but there are still a number of prospects that are going to visit throughout the month. Hearing a number of local prospects are opening the month at other schools but major targets like Armondo Blount, Jeremiah Smith, Joshisa Trader, Zaquan Patterson, Chris Ewald Jr. and more will be coming back to Coral Gables outside of Saturday.

Miami started slow in 2024 but I fully expect a massive boom closer to the summer as relationships with both coordinators and the additions at multiple position coach spots grow with prospects. Expect at least two QB commits, at least 3 wide receivers, a continued focus on the OL and IDL, plus at least two cornerbacks and safeties each.

If I had to put money on the first non-kicker commit of 2024, it would be top five safety and four-star Zaquan Patterson out of Chaminade-Madonna. Watch for that development over the next month or so

JT Staying With Miami

This might have been the easiest decision in the history of decision making. Certainly no ground lost in recruiting at the defensive end position, if anything it's an upgrade.

If the staff remains as is, I certainly like Miam's chances to be as successful in recruiting in the 2023 cycle and good enough to go bowling at the very least. Hot take. lol
