Intel on Spring Practice before Spring Game

The following is information gathered from several sources from Miami's recent practices, including the last scrimmage on Saturday.

The spring game is scheduled for this Saturday, April 12th, at 4 PM at Cobb Field on the campus of the University of Miami.

Quarterbacks

Carson Beck
has been very active in practice, getting a lot of motion with his arm, but he is still not throwing. Rumors are swirling that he may be throwing behind closed doors.

QB Emory Williams was held out of the scrimmage due to a minor lower extremity injury, but I'm hearing he was back at practice on Tuesday. Williams connected with Jo Jo on a nice throw and catch during Tuesday's practice.

Williams seems to not be progressing, and many think he is dealing with a hamstring injury. He could be in the portal next week.

Freshman Luke Nickel seems to be outplaying sophomore Judd Anderson for the third-string quarterback position. Hit Malachi Toney on a deep ball for a touchdown during the scrimmage.

There is no real deep passing game threat because of the lack of consistent quarterback play.

Running Backs

Sophomore tight end Elija Lofton is getting some work in at running back, running screens, and seems unstoppable. Scored a touchdown in Tuesday's practice.

Mark Fletcher is running wheel routes and catching the ball from the backfield.

Jordan Lyle is tough to tackle, continues to impress.

Chris Wheatley-Humphrey is emerging as third running back. He is making people miss in a phone booth and could be a reliable thrid down back.

Girard Pringle seems to be out with an injury.

Wide Receivers

Freshman Josh Moore continues to shine. Beat Ethan O'Connor in one-on-ones Tuesday.

Freshman Malachi Toney continues to shine, beating Zechariah Poyser in one-on-ones.

CJ Daniels moves well for his size and may have a 600 to 800-yard year.

Offensive Line

Anez Cooper
is standing out as the best offensive linemen with Mauigoa emerging as the best prospect.

Matt McCoy has been out, and Ryan Rodriguez has been getting most of the first team reps at left guard.

Tommy Kinsler is still remaining as the sixth offensive lineman.

Samson Okunlola and Deryc Plazz are not developing to the level the coaches would like.

Defensive Line

The defensive line was the standout group at Saturday's scrimmage. The D-line has been stopping the run for most of the spring.

Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor continue to dominate, as both seem to be primed for big seasons in 2025.

The battles between Bain and OL Francis Mauigoa have been epic. Bain definitely seems to be back to form.

David Blay might start at defensive tackle along with Ahmad Moten.

Bain, Blay, Moten, and Akheem Mesidor are likely your starting four D-Linemen with Malik Bryant and Hayden Lowe as backups on the edge and Justin Scott and Armondo Blount the backups on the inside.

Chase Smith is playing more on the edge than at linebacker. Booker Pickett is still developing.

Linebackers

Cam "Bobby" Pruitt
looking very physical in practice. Jaylin Alderman playing at "Mike" linebacker spot. Wesley Bissainthe got an interception in Tuesday's practice.

Defensive Backs

Charles Brantley
continues to show that he is a valuable player acquired through the transfer portal. He seems to show feistiness and physicality in every practice. Markeith Williams and Dylan Day were switching at safety.

Xavier Lucas remains solid and should be a formidable duo with OJ Frederique when he returns from injury. Damari Brown and Brantley are the other reliable corners.

Zechariah Poyser will likely start at safety, and Markeith Williams could be the other safety.

Chris Ewald is getting work at safety and nickel corners and continues to impress with Amari Wallace. Zaquan Patterson is still being held out due to injury.

Ethan O'Connor is not impressing and would not be surprised if he is back in the portal. Jadais Richard is likely not to play this season.

Intel on new basketball assistant coach

A source tells me that Eric Pastrana will be hired as an assistant basketball coach.

An announcement can come as soon as today.

Erik Pastrana (pronounced puh-strah-nuh) was named an assistant coach at Georgia on March 28, 2022. He spent the 2021-22 season on Mike White’s staff at Florida and also has successful Division I coaching stints at Oklahoma State, Florida Atlantic, Florida International and Stephen F. Austin.

Pastrana has played a pivotal role in Georgia's success over the past two seasons. He helped the Bulldogs up their regular-season win total by 10 victories from 2021-22 to 2022-23, the second largest increase of any Power conference program. Last year, Georgia earned its first postseason invitation since 2017 and then reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since 2016.

During his season at Florida, the Gators went 20-14 and reached the second round of the 2022 NIT.

Pastrana spent the two seasons prior to that as an assistant coach and the recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma State. He helped the Cowboys sign the No. 4 recruiting class in 2020 that included Cade Cunningham, the 2021 Big 12 Player of the Year and a first-team All-American who went on to become the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

In 2021, the Cowboys advanced to the finals of the Big 12 Tournament, earned a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament and ended the year ranked No. 11 by the Associated Press – all firsts since 2005. Oklahoma State’s first-round win in the NCAA Tournament was its first since 2009.

Prior to his stint in Stillwater, Pastrana coached at three schools in Florida, his home state. In 2018-19, he was an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic working under Dusty May, one of three former Mike White assistants at Florida who are now Division I head coaches. Pastrana was head coach at Daytona State College for the 2017-18 season, where he led the Falcons to a 19-12 record and had four players named to the Mid-Florida All-Conference Team. A Miami native and Cuban American who is a member of the Latino Association of Basketball Coaches, Pastrana spent the 2016-17 campaign in his hometown as an assistant coach at FIU.

Pastrana also was an assistant coach for three seasons at Stephen F. Austin. During his tenure, the Lumberjacks won three consecutive Southland Conference Championships, produced three straight Southland Players of the Year and earned NCAA Tournament victories over VCU in 2014 and West Virginia in 2016. The 89 wins that staff accrued tied for the most by any coaching staff in its first three campaigns in NCAA history.

Pastrana began his career as a graduate assistant under Frank Martin at Kansas State from 2007-09. While at K-State, the Wildcats won 21 games each season, earned a pair of postseason bids, notched their first NCAA Tournament win in a decade in 2008 and saw freshman Michael Beasley selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft.

Following his experience with the Wildcats, Pastrana worked as an assistant coach at Labette Community College in Kansas and Northwest Florida State College. At NWFSC, Pastrana helped lead the Raiders to a 30-4 record and an appearance in the NJCAA National Championship game.

Pastrana earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Florida State in 2007 and a master's degree in counseling and student development from Kansas State in 2009. Pastrana is engaged to marry Brooke Di Orio in May 2025.
