6 Canes selected in MLB draft

Six Hurricanes heard their names called on the final day of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Wednesday afternoon.

Righthander Frankie Bartow (11th round, Washington), outfielder Romy Gonzalez (18th round, Chicago White Sox), righthander Andrew Cabezas (18th round, Minnesota), outfielder Danny Reyes (28th round, Detroit), pitcher Jeb Bargfeldt (29th round, Detroit) and pitcher Michael Mediavilla (34th round, Milwaukee) were all selected.

Bartow, who was selected with the 341st overall pick by the Nationals, compiled a 5-0 record with a 3.12 ERA in his junior season. The Miami native tied for the team lead with four saves and tossed 40.1 innings of relief in 23 appearances. In three seasons with the Hurricanes, Bartow has compiled a 12-3 record and a 3.06 ERA in 94 appearances spanning 126.2 innings.

Gonzalez, drafted No. 528 overall by the White Sox, had another strong season at the plate in 2018. The Miami native connected for eight doubles, two triples and four home runs, as well as led the Hurricanes with 30 RBI. In his three-year career at The U, Gonzalez has totaled 22 doubles, three triples, 16 home runs, 78 RBI and 35 steals.

Cabezas, taken with the No. 544 pick by the Twins, split last season between the bullpen and in the rotation. He finished with a 6-4 record, a 3.96 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 75.0 innings. In his three seasons at The U, the Miami Gardens, Fla., native has posted a 14-8 record with a 3.69 ERA and 213 career strikeouts in 192.2 career innings.

Reyes, selected No. 825 overall by the Tigers, was one of Miami's top hitters in his first season. The junior and Miami Springs, Fla., native, who transferred to Miami from Broward College, led the Hurricanes with a .321 batting average and five home runs this spring. Reyes, who missed half of the season with a hand injury, added nine doubles and 19 RBI.

Bargfeldt, taken by the Tigers one round after Reyes, capped an impressive two-year career with another standout season on the hill. Bargfeldt, who posted a 3.38 ERA, did not miss a turn in the rotation in a year he threw a team-high 101.1 innings. Bargfeldt struck out 76 batters and threw two complete games.

Mediavilla, who was picked by Milwaukee in the 34th round, made 16 appearances and three starts in his final season. A 2016 All-American, the laidback lefty struck out 31 batters across 26.1 innings this spring. For his career, Mediavilla compiled an 18-12 record and a 3.88 ERA with 225 strikeouts in 232.0 combined innings.
