Greetings, Baseball Caniacs:

I hope U are having a great week.

Since we have no midweek game(s) this week, I thought this would be a great opportunity to once again check under the hood and look at our numbers to see how we are doing 45 games into the season with just 10 games remaining, 6 in the ACC.

As we head into the weekend series vs non-conference opponent Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, let's take a look at our record to date:

SEASON RECORD

Overall Record:
31-14 (.689%)
ACC Record: 14-10 (.583%)
Winning Streak: 4
Home: 20-7
Away: 11-7

So, we are 3-14 overall and 14-10/ACC. For comparison, here's our record through 45 games in the last 3 years + overall, give or take a couple of days and games (my math).

Note how bad our out-of-conference (OOC) records were in 2017 & 2018. That kept us out of the post-season because we didn't win enough of the games we were supposed to win.

2016:
Through this date: 35-7 overall (3 games canceled),
Finished 51-15, (21-7/ACC - 30-8 OOC) Went to Omaha

2017:
22-22 overall (2 games canceled), no post-season
Finished 32-27 (16-13/ACC - 16/14 OOC)

2018:
Through this date: 17-25 overall, no post-season
Finished 28-26, (16-13/ACC - 12/13 OOC)

2019:

Through this date: 31-14 (14-10/ACC - 18/6 OOC)

RPI

We are No. 11 this week and even though we swept No. 45 Virginia Tech, we didn't move up or down. The Hokies dropped only 1 place to No. 46.

No. 7: Louisville (no change from last week, even though they swamped (and swept) Ala.A&M.
No. 8 Georgia Tech, up from No. 9. Taking 2-3 from them are our best Ws to date. (BTW, the SEC has 4 of the top 5 RPIs, 5 in the Top 10 (vs our 3) and 10 in the Top 25 vs the ACC's 4..

Unfortunately for us, we have Bethune-Cookman this weekend and they have an RPI of 268. With a record of 16-30, 9-12 MEAC, our RPI may take a good hit. Almost every ACC school plays a lower-level school this weekend except for 4 schools who are in conference: FSU hosts Pitt and Louisville travels to Notre Dame.

UPDATE: STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE (Courtesy: warrennolan.com Link)
This week we moved up 2 places to No. 8! The only other ACC team in the Top 10 is GT and they moved to No. 3; in Top 20, VT up 1 No. 19. The best team in the ACC, record-wise is Louisville and they are a surprising No. 35! The SEC still as 7 teams in the Top 10 including Florida who moved up 1 to No. 6, after taking 2-3 at home to ranked UK. Their conference record is 11-13. They have a very tough series this weekend at Top 10 UGA.

ACC STANDINGS (the acc.com Link)
We are 2nd at 14-10 behind GT and UNC who are tied for 1st one game ahead at 15-9. Duke, a team we see at the end of the regular season is 1 game behind us at 13-11.

In other words...

No. 1/Tie GT/UNC: 15/9
No. 2 (or is it 3?) UM: 14/10
No. 3 (or 4) Duke:
13/11

ACC HITTING/TEAM
- Out of 14 (theacc.com Link)
It wasn't all that long ago that we led the conference in hitting at just over .300. As of today, we have slipped to 3rd at .288 tied with Wake Forest. VT did a great job shutting down our offense. After scoring 45 runs in the previous 4 games, the Hokies held us to just 7 runs on a total of 16 hits (6,5 & 5). Our staff wasn't shabby We held VT to only 15 hits( 6,4 & 5).

No. 3/Tie UM/WF .288

Power Surge Pushes Canes Baseball Back to Prominence (UM Link)
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Few sports provide flukier results than baseball. Sample sizes matter in this sport more than maybe any other. So, if you were hesitant to buy into Miami's offensive resurgence after the first game of the season, no one could blame you.

Here's the thing, though—if you didn't believe it, well, you were wrong. It turns out, what Miami displayed to open first-year head coach Gino DiMare's tenure was no lucky break.

These Canes, folks, they can flat-out rake. (Read More)

Surprise, surprise, we are ranked 12th out of 14 teams ahead of FSU and Pitt. We've committed 58 E, tied with FSU, while Pitt brings up the read with 68. Last week, we were hovering around No. 200. I hate to say it but having Freddy Zamora out of the lineup has helped. Against VT, we committed only 2 Es in 1 game each.
