Caniacs….
Notre Dame rallied from a 3-1 deficit to score 3 runs in both the 7th and 8th innings Sunday to beat No. 1 Tennessee 7-3 in Knoxville to earn a trip to Omaha and end the Vols’ historic season. K The Irish take 2 of 3 games to advance and it’s only the 2nd series UT has lost at home all season (the other was to UK).
With the loss, Miami remains the last preseason No. 1 team to reach Omaha in the same year as No. 1. That was in 1999. Not sure if this is part of the stat but the Canes also won the CWS that year so it was a heck of a run. Meanwhile, Tennessee was this year’s pre-season No. 1 and they stayed there all year until today finishing 57-9 overall.
Elsewhere, Oklahoma went to Blacksburg and won 2 of 3 against Virginia Tech to send the favored Hokies packing and give the Big 12 champs a spot in the CWS. The Sooners’ pitching was outstanding limiting VT’s high-powered offense to just 2 hits while OU lit up Hokie pitching for 15 hits, including 5 La Bombas/HRs.
On Saturday, Texas A&M eliminated Louisville by beating the visiting Cards in 2 straight 1-run games so the Aggies are in the CWS under their new HC who was at top-rated TCU last year. I would say the A&M admin hit a HR with that hire.
In the meantime, North Carolina is hosting a very good Arkansas team (they’re all really good at this point) and they are tied 2-2 in the 9th after a weather delay. Arky won Game 1, 4-1 yesterday so UNC must win to force Game 3 or they’re done.
Update: UNC plated a run in the top of the 9th to take a
3-2 lead, but the Hogs rallied by scoring twice in the bottom of the inning winning 4-3 and oust the Heels at home while punching their ticket to the CWS
So, the ACC finished the super weekend 1-4 with 2 of the losses not only against the SEC (Louisville at TXAM and ArkybatbUNC) but also at home (Arky at UNC and Oklahoma at VT) despite something like nearly 70% of home teams in the supers usually advance to Omaha. I believe that stat is right.
Here’s how the ACC record finished this weekend:
Notre Dame: 2-1 At Tennessee, off to Omaha
Louisville: 0-2 At TXAM, lost both games by 1 run
North Carolina: 0-2 Home vs Arkansas, 2 and out
Virginia Tech: 1-2. Home vs Oklahoma, lost 11-2 in Game 3
The final W-L tally by our four ACC teams: 3-7.
FWIW: Had we win on our regional we would have hosted No. 11 seed Southern Miss, but because they won their regional Ole Miss traveled to Hattiesburg for the super regional. Here’s how that played out:
Game 1: Ole Miss 10, Southern Miss 0
Game 2: Ole Miss 5, Southern Miss 0
Not only do the Eagles go 0-2 at home, they’re shut out in back-to-back games for the first time since 1987. For Ole Miss, these were their first shutouts…of the year.
And Ole Miss is going to Omaha instead of Miami.
Despite the poor showing by the ACC, what Notre Dame did to eliminate top-ranked Tennessee in Knoxville is a major shocker. I don’t think anyone outside of South Bend gave the Irish a chance to unseat the Vols.
And no matter what happens in Omaha, how is Notre Dame HC Link Jarrett, born and raised in Tallahassee and a former FSU player, not the top candidate to replace Mike Martin Jr.? I would think the FSU admin has to do what UM did with Mario. Back up the Brinks truck and offer whatever it takes to bring their esteemed alum home.
That’s all I got. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, Caniacs.
Go Canes!
