For a different perspective; I live in suburban Chicago and recently visited Tampa and Naples. Had already canceled a trip to FL over virus concerns, but a friend was diagnosed terminal with a rapidly advancing disease so her daughter advanced her wedding and put it together in 6 days. It would be our last chance to see a dear friend so we made the trip.
Reading about and living the draconian lockdowns are two very different things, and visiting FL really opened my eyes. It’s not just about being locked in your home and forgoing entertainment opportunities. Until my visit I had not dined inside a restaurant since March. During the summer many restaurants found a way to provide seating outside. That no longer became realistic after early fall.
The number of strip malls, stores, and restaurants permanently closed here is mind boggling. They will never open again. That will be years before those spaces are filled again.
Schools are just now putting in place a plan to reopen, and that only applies to grade schools. HS remain closed. Suicides for children and crime are through the roof, it’s heartbreaking. Remote learning? The Chicago mayor in a interview said 30,000 kids in Chicago don’t even bother to log on any longer each day. Catholic schools have been open since Sept. Without any issue.
If you live in FL, thank your Lucky stars. If you live there and complain without experiencing the draconian steps other states have taken, get off your high horse. I know a number of people who have had COVI, some with minor complications, none that have died as a result. I read each day lately of local kids over dosing or attempted suicide. This is insanity.
