A huge setback for Florida Gov Ron Desantis and his fellow Republicans. A few days ago a Federal judge blocked most of the measures in the state's voter suppression law. What is most remarkable is the judges blistering critique of the law. Senate Bill 90 in what can be only described as a "scorched earth ruling." Across 288 pages federal judge Mark Walker noted "Florida's grotesque history of racial discrimination." he went on to state The plaintiffs allege SB90 runs roughshod over the right to vote, unnecessarily making voting harder for all eligible Floridians, unduly burdening disabled voters, and intentionally targeting minority voters---all to improve the electoral process of the party in power." The party in power is the republican party. He went on to state "having reviewed all the evidence, this court finds that, for the most part, the plaintiffs are right."

Typical Hawaiian post. Lot's of inflamatory rhetoric without relevant detail: Take a look at the purple district:

That is the district drawing that would protect Dem Al Lawson's seat. It is very similar to the current Lawson district that is a carve out of various areas in Jacksonville, Tallahassee and rural northern Florida. It covers three areas that are all culturally different. This is not a natural district. It was drawn to assure electing a minority. But it is unlikely to meet new anti gerimandering laws.

Now look at DeSantis desired map:
J3K5J5A2BFGGTFPRTV7XUVI2NM.PNG

The purple district in Jacksonville is likely to elect a minority. But the beige more normal looking district covering Tallahasee, its surrounding rural counties and the gulf coast, a natural trading area, is less likely to elect a democrat. Many Republicans have moved into the Gulf Coast. The issue is the current democrat congressman Al Lawson lives in Tallahasee. The goal of designing districts is to represent natural communities, not protect specific incumbents based upon where they live. Basically DeSantis is saying that new anti gerrymandering guidelines make it illegal to take a group of Jacksonville voters and plop them in Lawson's Tallahassee district in order to increase the chances of Al Lawson keeping his seat.

And BTW Al Lawson is not a particuliarly popular or highly regarded legistlator. He has one of the highest missed vote records in Congress DeSantis is attempting to balance minority representation with no gerrymandering. The activist lower court decision will be appealed and likely overturned. DeSantis did not take out a sharpie and draw this district. An army of attorneys versed on the current law did.

Yeah, I saw that yesterday. Some of these restrictive voting laws are just removing the concept of democracy where the people are supposed to elect the leaders of our government. I think what is happening is when people don't like who is elected they take action to change democracy. We saw this during the days of jim crow and the beginning of the voting rights act.

@sabrose @central17 @majus12 & to all those repubs in the senate and Congress: Fact is if they did their jobs correctly without voter fraud, no voter suppression and no gerrymandering they would definitely be in the clear. No need to worry about others looking over their shoulders. DO YOUR JOB so you keep yourselves above reproach. A perfect example is former Trump cheif of staff Mark Meadows, who not only received texts from Ginny Thomas, wife of SCOTUS Clarence Thomas on encouraging Meadows to push the envelope towards Trump's insistence there was fraud with the 2020 elections which emboldened Jan 06 insurrection. Meadows, meanwhile is under investigation by the North Carolina AG. In 2020 Meadows filled out a voter registration form to register to vote in Scaley Mountain, NC. The address he wrote is a trailer home in Scaley Mountain. The address he wrote on the form is 495 McConnell road. This is near the Georgia state line. The previous owner said she never saw or met Meadows. The registration form, if correctly filled out is the right to vote in Macon County, GA, which is a stones throw from Scaly Mountain. Meadows has perpetuated claims the 2020 election was stolen. By making the claim the 2020 elections were stolen he definitely wants to distract Americans so he vote illegally. A clear case of voter fraud.

Anyone can draw up maps with different colors to try to convince everyone its factual. They can use fluorescent colors it wouldnt make a difference. With republican states advocating longer lines, no water provided at the polls, no voting on Sundays, etc., its a clear message the decks are stacked against minorities and people with special needs. Statistics show nearly 60% of blacks vote on Sunday. The long lines and not passing out water is a clear violation towards those Americans covered by ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act). Its bad enough when they have to wait in line while being forced to be in line in in climate weather.

Hawaian,
Another evasive answer. I did not draw these maps. They are the official maps pat heart of the legal challenge at hand. They represent district boundaries. These are facts. You and other other libbies respond to facts and details with inflamatory generalized accusations without evidence. Please explain why a lizard shaped Al Lawson district is better than a uniform rather square district with Tallahassee as the center point? The people in that district will vote for whom ever they believe to best represent their interests.

You can consult with Mazie Hiruno the dumbest Senator in the history of the Republic to verify that these are the true maps. Or better yet google it. .

To a lib having voter ID is racist. That is silly and racist in itself. It assumes minorities who are citizens are too stupid to get one. They don't want fair elections.
The people of that state are there to decide if a voter I D should be required. Not you or I. See you can't complain about too much government and bring it back to the states but when a state makes a decision you don't like them have issues with it. You can't have it both ways.

We need IDs to fly, drive, pharmacy (some meds), visit a school (CD, we know you can't go within 100 yards of one, its ok), and so many other things require ID (applying for a loan etc) , buying a car, house, etc

Why not require an ID to vote?

Never said you drew, designed the maps. Yes they were put out by The Florida House Redistricting Committee, AKA the party in power. They will practically do anything to sweep voters off of their feet.

Hawaiin, Lay off the Propaganda. It will be proven in the next year that Propaganda is legal now in the US. Smith Mjundy Act of 2013- Obama changed the laws to make it legal for US Media to use propaganda on US citizens

I agree you need an Govt ID to vote. But in the state of Alabama its different strokes for different folks. All DMVs in the Black belt counties have been closed. To get a govt ID he/she has to go to the next county to get one. If they drive they can simply get to a DMV but most of them dont so they have to rely on Public transportation which often isnt available in their communities so the only thing to do is walk to the next county which in all likelihood is several miles away. This is voter suppression, its a deterent created by the party in power. Its to make Black Americans feel disenfranchised.
Over 60% of Blacks living in Alabama live in Public housing and a public housing ID IS A GOVT ID. But in this state its unsatisfactory. Thats wrong to make it hard for Blacks to vote. So Florida isnt the only state that tries to make Blacks feel disinfranchised. BTW This isnt propaganda.
