CORAL GABLES, Fla. –University of Miami student-athletes continued their strong work in the classroom this past year, posting a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 92 percent, as announced Wednesday by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Hurricanes' GSR is higher than the national average of 88 percent.
"Our student-athletes continue to strive for excellence in the classroom and I couldn't be prouder that we once again exceeded the GSR national average," Director of Athletics Blake James said. "Our commitment to academic achievement at UM is unwavering and it's a tribute to the hard work of our student-athletes, coaches and academic support staff."
Miami's 92 percent ties its 2014 GSR for the second-best mark in school history. UM posted a 93 percent GSR in 2012. Miami owns the best overall 2019 GSR among Division I institutions in the state of Florida and is tied for 20th nationally among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools.
Eight Miami programs posted perfect scores of 100 percent in the GSR: men's and women's basketball, men's cross country/track and field, golf, men's diving, women's swimming and diving, soccer and volleyball. The most recent Division I Graduation Success Rates are based on the four entering classes from 2009-10 to 2012-13, comprising more than 110,000 student-athletes.
The Miami men's diving and women's golf teams continued their consistent perfection with 100 percent GSR for the 15th consecutive year.
The Hurricane volleyball and women's swimming and diving programs also continued their string of success in the classroom, earning a 100 percent GSR for the eighth straight season.
The men's basketball program earned its second straight perfect GSR rating, coming in 17 percent above the NCAA average of 83 percent. Women's basketball also posted a perfect GSR rating, nine points above the NCAA average.
Rounding out Miami's perfect GSR numbers in 2019 were the soccer and men's cross country and track and field programs. The Hurricanes soccer program earned a perfect rating for the fourth consecutive season, while the men's cross country and track and field programs earned a third straight perfect mark.
In addition, the Miami baseball (90 percent) and football (81 percent) programs posted GSR totals above the NCAA average.

The NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) was developed in response to college and university presidents suggesting that graduation data more accurately reflect the mobility among college students today. The GSR measures graduation rates at Division I institutions and includes students transferring into the institutions. The GSR also allows institutions to subtract student-athletes who leave their institutions prior to graduation as long as they would have been academically eligible to compete had they remained. The NCAA began compiling the GSR with the entering class of 1995.

- In the sport of football, the ACC remains the only conference to have multiple teams register GSR scores of 90 or higher every year since 2005. Duke (96), Louisville (91) and Boston College (90) reached that plateau this year.
