Although a TD.....JW should have stepped up into the pocket and to the left giving him a chance to reset his feet to throw or run for a nice gain as he had open field. It was 1st and 20.
The play:
Ball is snapped at 25
JW in shotgun gets it at the 30 and drops back
Left to right:
Zion - kicks back to the 30 and is able (barely) to get a push on the DE that puts him slightly behind JW and out of play.
ND - Is in complete control of the DLineman and takes him out to the left and behind JW and out of play.
Gaynor - Snaps ball and identifies DLineman who is stunting from his left to right....picks him up and is not a rushing threat to JW. He does tip the ball though.
Right Gaurd #51 - After snap....takes three to four little steps back and to the right and touches no one.
Right tackle #74 - After snap....picks up the DE and controls him making him no threat to JW or the play.
BJ #9 - Releases down field on a route....
DJ Dallas - After snap.....steps up to pick up the blitzing LB#30 and gets knocked backward almost allowing for the sack.
Positives:
4 offensive lineman get thier hands on someone during the play
JWs strenght and conditioning was a factor in getting the ball to BJ. With no help coming from his planting leg/foot - he basically threw from his "core" and got the job done. Credit to David Feeley and staff.
BJ stayed focused after tip and still caught ball.....took a shot and still was able to score. Credit to his S&C.
Nagatives and how do we improve on a play like this:
Zion needs to adjust to the speed of the game.....we already know he has quick feet. A split second more and his guy gets the sack.
Gaynor - How do we get lineman to prevent DLineman from getting thier hands up. Is it a leverage issue? If Gaynor bends his knees a little more and gets under the pads of this guy (in his mid-section area) would the DLineman feel the need to protect this area of his body not covered by pads and keep his hands down to protect himself?
Right guard #51 - No one to block? C'mon
DJ Dallas - Took a pop from the LB and got knocked back. There was no play action on this play, why not have Realus George back there who is heavier then Dallas for blocking on this play?
JW - Failed to have instinct to step up in the pocket and too his left. He is lucky he was strong enought to make the throw from his back foot and get the ball to BJ.
This is the what Enos is talking about - knowing and trusting the pocket. It collapsed pretty quicky after the snap and JW failed to feel it "instinctively" and move up in it. Although it turned out great....9/10 times it will not as the odds are not in your favor. You cannot play the QB posistion effectivly throwing from you back foot. This is where JW REALLY needs to focus on going forward if he is to get better and succeed.
