We talk about whether one of the backs can be an every down back. Got me thinking about something I've wondered about previously. In regards to DLs and some degree LBs, are every down players becoming a thing of the past. You have your rush specialist, run stuffers etc. LBs have those for covetage etc so we see lots of situational substitutions all over on both sides of the ball in today's football.
I get it, you want the best player in for the situation. But it gnaws at me that it makes things too predictable. Even teams using the wildcat aren't fooling anyone unless they run a non wildcat type of play. So sure you scheme it to try and reduce predictability on O but then you may not have the best players in for that play. On D I think the situational subbing can actually give the O something more to work with. I realize it is a damned if you do damned if you don't kind of thing. Just thought I'd like to read some thoughts on this, thanks.
