It was 1979 and I was a troubled youth who quit high school. They would take you back then post Vietnam because the military wasn't respected after the war but by quitting high school I had to go in without a rate. Once in Long Beach I got my GED on the base. Nowadays a kid with my history would be rejected I'm told.
The military did wonders for alot of people just like you and me. I was one bad decision away from the penitentiary. I enlisted about 8 years after you in 1987 right at the beginning of the crack epidemic and alot of my friends either got strung out or went to jail for selling it. I could have been one of them but went in the Navy and they sent me as far away from Fort Wayne, IN as possible which was Subic Bay, Philippines.
