Governor DeSantis continues to prohibit the massive cruise industry based in Florida from offering cruises where the passengers and crew must all be vaccinated. This looks crazy to me as a non-Floridian.

* The cruise industry was crushed by the pandemic. It needs to rebound and some cruise lines believe that a vaccine only cruise will stimulate demand for cruises. Why would the governor interfere in this free market decision? Let capitalism work! It’s none of his business.

* Cruise passengers bring big money to Miami and Ft Lauderdale. They stay in hotels and patronize local restaurants pre and post their cruises. Why would DeSantis discourage this economic rebound in the tourism industry? Bizarre.

The only explanation I can think of is that the governor believes his prejudice against vaccine only cruises will win him some political support among anti vaccine Republicans. Is that correct?

For DeSantis backers on this site, do your support the governor’s treatment of the cruise industry? If so, can you explain why his stance makes sense?

Thanks.

He like others do not believe in a Covid Passport which is viewed by many as an infringement on civil liberties in the State of Florida.
It's a real interesting argument in that you could view a cruise ship as a Covid petri dish while at the same time, civil liberties are in Florida State law.
So, shouldn't it be up to the individual paying good money to go on a cruise to make their own decision as to weigh the risk versus the government dictating to you what you have to comply with and in the form of compliance which is an infringement on our civil liberties? Again, we don't need big brother to tell us what to do or run our lives , however there is some merit in making sure that all passengers and crew are as safe as possible from Covid. Tough argument...

I’m a hundred percent behind DeSantis, for the reasons Allied stated, but there’s more to it.

Anytime society has tried to identify and label groups, it hasn’t ended well. It also creates two classes of citizens.

It could turn into a back door for mandatory vaccination by the government on its people, which should scare the hell out of us. The government could pressure businesses to demand it, there’s some evidence it already has done that.

If you knew what you were talking about, which you don't, then you would know that DeSantis sued the Federal Gov't to open up the cruise industry. All you have to do is research. So he fought to re-open that industry which is so vital to Florida. He has also stated on the record that he is adamantly opposed to vaccine passports and I 100% agree with that stance. Again it boils down to personal choice. If you are comfortable taking a cruise then do it, if not, then don't.

Once that door is open, never be able to shut it.

I agree with you except I don't think the argument is that tough. If you are worried don't cruise. If you are vaccinated, probably less concerned. If not vaccinated, maybe you choose not to cruise.

Or, whether you are vaccinated or not, you can just identify as vaccinated, problem solved.

Thoughtful, Allied, unlike the arguments of HJ.

I too believe that it’s “up to the individual paying good money…to make their own decision.” Similarly, I think it’s up to each cruise line to make its own pricing and marketing decisions.

Ex.

*Cruises operating out of Israel initiated the concept of an all vaccinated ship. It was a success. Did Netanyahu interfere? Of course not.

*Should all cruises require vaccinations of passengers and crew? Of course not. Some passengers are ok with the risk. No problem.

*If I prefer an all vaccinated ship, do I have the right to purchase that cruise option if it’s offered by a cruise line? Of course. DeSantis has no right or business interfering with my choice.

Loyalty to DeSantis has clouded the issue a bit. If you’re a free market capitalist, it’s illogical to defend the governor’s “big brother” interference with the free market. He’s playing politics and in so doing is hurting the economy of South Florida and denying the rights of people and businesses to make their own choices.

HJ's argument was thoughtful and very sound. If those ships are in Florida ports and they want Florida citizens to "prove" they've been vaccinated then he does have a say as our Governor. As for personal choice on whether a person wants to "prove" their status I agree with you on that point. No I am not being contradictory I will cite you an example.

Tedeshi Trucks Band is doing 2 nights at the Beacon Theatre in NYC in a month or 2. The invitation to buy tickets was emailed to me. It stated clearly that anyone attending must show proof of vaccination. So I now have to make that choice. I choose not to. But that's NY.

For cruises to mandate proof of vaccine goes against current Florida Law.

I knew this was coming told my daughter in law it was coming. She is anti-vaxx. I am not. I told her vaccines would NOT be mandated BUT they will make your life difficult if you don't vaccinate. That is where some industries are headed.

Hes not hurting the economy, that’s laughable, unlike California businesses are coming to Florida.

I had to laugh at a left wing democrat’s concern over big brother, you guys want government to run every aspect of life, you’re never concerned about a citizens right to peacefully assemble and worship God.

Desantis is protecting his citizens rights to equal treatment under the law. He knows the cruise industry will eventually cave, it’s too big of a market in the state of Florida, and it’s business friendly.

The cruise lines nor the politicians want to see anyone get Covid especially on a Cruise Ship. The way I read it , the problem is with how to prove , identify those who have taken the Covid shot or shots. I agree that a so called Covid Passport infringes on a person's civil liberties. A lesser part of me feels that the Chinese may have militarized this virus which makes this and was a national emergency. Drastic measures are taken during times of emergencies. Since we are supposedly at the tail end of this virus and assuming their are no dangerous variants to this virus in our future then I am against this Covid Passport. Should a dangerous variant emerge, the Cruise Industry is dead again thus becoming a non issue. JMO.

The infringement on civil liberties scares me the most, its happens most during a crisis if we allow it, and we did during Covid. I fell for the Patriot Act after 911, and my fear influenced my support. I was pissed off at Rand Paul at the time for being against it, it turns out he was right.

Again, as he has done (and been criticized for ) DeSantis takes the approach most American. FREEDOM of choice for the citizen to decide what they are comfortable doing.

They're just nervous about DeSantis and are grasping at straws. It's hilarious that vaccinated people are scared of non-vaccinated people. The mother of all oxymoron's.

I’m just not feeling this opposition to a Covid passport. It’s nothing new.

ex. If you go on a safari in Africa, you must bring along your vaccination “passport” (a small 4 page folded paper filled out by your US medical provider) to prove that you have been vaccinated against yellow fever. Local authorities (eg in Tanzania) will not allow you to enter or continue without showing proof of vaccination. This has been the policy for decades. No tourist that I’ve met has ever mentioned or objected to this proof of vaccination.

I’m also not comfortable with the government telling me that I can’t make the choice to cruise only on a fully vaccinated ship. Since when have Republicans become so comfortable with “big government” telling them what they cannot do? You can like and support DeSantis. Fine. But, his prohibition of fully vaccinated cruises is government overreach. It’s inconsistent with “less government” and a person’s freedom of choice.

Actually you have it backwards. This isn't big government telling people what they can and can not do. This is Government telling a business that the policy they want doesn't jive with our States rules. You want a fully vaccinated proof ship? Get it in another port. As for Africa they can mandate certain vaccinations if they choose and you or I can choose not to travel there.

Not. His behind closed doors signing of new voter restriction laws (covered only by Fox as he specified) and his attempt to fly flags at half staff in honor of Rush Limbaugh were just too much. His playing to the Trump base for 2024 is too obvious and heavy handed for me. Not a guy to be trusted.

It's pretty senseless especially because cruises want to offer cruises that aren't exclusive to vaccinated people.

It makes zero sense for the action but he also understands his main base is anti-science.

Exactly, did I miss the Biden regime waiving HIPAA regulations to certain pet industries. Maybe the airline industry can now require naked pictures of select passengers for them to travel. For medical purposes only!

The new voting laws in Florida have been anything but behind closed doors. Governor DeSantis and the legislature have been very open and transparent on the issue for months. Standard debate occured, a recorded vote was taken and the measure passed.

You and other democrats might not like the outcome, but to make the "behind closed doors" reference was disengenuous and partisan.

17,

DeSantis signed the bill live on Fox and Friends. He explicitly excluded the MSM and explicitly gave Fox exclusivity for the signing event.

Does that sound like open and transparent? He is pandering too obviously to the Trump base without any nod to the general electorate.

I'd be interested in his reasoning, but no, I can't explain. I support him, but need to know why he would not let the free market make its choice. That's what we conservatives are about.

Off your subject but time sensitive. This very moment, as I write this, I'm listening to The President's speech saying we need to share the wealth. No! No, we need to share the opportunity to gain wealth. We need the same opportunity to gain wealth. Anything else is 'pissing in the soup'.

What that means is that if wealth is distributed, it's meaningless. It's giving away a product that is then worth less than what existed previous to the giveaway.

Either we allow the greatness of American entrepreneurship lead us forward or else.

Def.: else = Antifa, BLM, College Educators (theoretic masturbators...real world morons), the touchy, feely Democratic Party and the national media who---without the 1st question--- totes the Liberal water...very few of them get it. What we have here, super talented businesspeople, who, unshackled can easily build the economy and better lives for us all. US ALL! Those on the Left truly don't have the slightest notion how value is created...they don't even realize that this is possible...let alone probable.

Cortez,

Common Man to use a phrase you are familiar with. Every Florida based media publication has covered this story thoroughly and with full information from day one. The people that are affected - FLORIDA VOTERS - have had full access and knowledge. Desantis spoke regularly to all local media outlets. Are you really getting pissy because Desantis gave the first interview to Ainsley and Pete rather than Mika and her wife Joe? Are you really saying that what MSNBC clowns say is more important than Florida citizens? I really would expect more from you than that.

I get it, you don't like the bill, but don't attempt to make this into something it is not. You should be far more worried about earthquakes under Lake Tahoe. Hiding under Mika's skirt with Joe will not protect you from that.

Fake news? HJ, You are living in almost post-Trump era believing the Fox News propaganda and speaking to like-minded people.

Believe: the voters threw Trump out of office by over 7 million votes. 51%-47%_. incumbent presidents rarely lose. Trump did. You can piss and moan. You can claim fake news. But, you are now in the (very noisy) minority. Live, with it!

FAKE NEWS in last few weeks has;
Admitted the dossier was BS
Admitted there was some truth to the Wuhan Lab leak
Apologized for both
Problem is they knew ALL OF THIS a long time ago.
