With his fifth year as Hurricanes coach approaching, Golden feels confident the alterations he implemented will have a positive effect. As such, he finds little value in rehashing last year.

“I’m excited about the direction we’re going and I’m not really worried about what has transpired,” he said.

In a wide-ranging, 75-minute talk with reporters at the ACC Kickoff Tuesday at Pinehurst Resort, Golden expressed his excitement over the growth of his team, its lack of selfishness and its skill level. He thinks the growth of quarterback Brad Kaaya will let UM call more complex, effective plays. He believes his defense, which returns a host of experienced seniors, juniors and sophomores, will be able to play the Hurricanes’ hybrid scheme more effectively. He expects every player on the roster to be healthy when camp opens Aug. 6.

“If we’ve been waiting until July 21st to get our motivation, guess what? We’re in trouble,” Golden said. “I think there’s a calmness and a poise about our team. … I don’t think they’re paying a bit of attention to anything on the outside.”

Golden called that lack of drama “exhilarating.”

“I came here to coach football, man,” he said. “I came here to coach Deon Bush and Jamal Carter and Raphael Kirby, Quan Muhammad and Darrion Owens. That’s what we’re doing right now and it’s fun. We’re not dealing with a lot of external stuff – man, that’s why I came to Miami.

“I wanted to coach Brad Kaaya. I wanted to coach a guy that has as much passion for football and winning and studying as I do, and as the staff does. You say boring? We’re like, ‘Can we start tomorrow?’ That’s how we feel.”
