BillBoard Music Awards....Shame on you

Joetoth............you forgot Neil Diamond........LOL....one of the greatest selling stars or ALL time......

You're right......lol
Actually, as a writer "Leslie" was seriously underrated. Almost every song the Monkeys did was written by him. Add Deep Purple (Kentucky Woman), UB40 (Red, Red Wine), Urge Overkill (Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon/Pulp Fiction) and many others to the lengthy list of people who used his music and he was pretty versatile as well. Plus opening for the Who ain't bad!

Please explain how Purple Rain "outdid" Thriller.

And Prince and Michael Jackson are not even in the same stratosphere when it comes to selling records and creating music.

People conveniently forget Michael Jackson is in the Song Writers Hall of Fame.

He created more #1 hits by the age of 23 than Prince did in his whole career.

I like Prince and I know he died and everything but people have gone way overboard with this. Prince is not in the same realm as Michael Jackson or Madonna. Yes he played an instrument better than they did but that is not all there is to being a musician.
Billboard charts, but I know Thiller came out in 82 and Purple rain came in 84 or 85, but in 84 or 85 Prince Top the Charts with Thiller coming in second. Lol, Mike is the best I will agree, but Prince did alot of ish in this industry. Great song writer and performer. Could play just about every instrument. Wrote and produce Purple rain. Mike got alot of help on Thiller.

Some of you are either too young to remember Madonna or just flat out don't care about issues in the music industry that don't relate to playing a musical instrument.

No one is saying that Madonna plays any instrument better than Prince, but if you grew up in the 80's, pop music was all Michael Jackson and Madonna.

She was one of the first female artists to bring up issues like interracial relationships (which was taboo for a white woman) and abortion in her videos and her songs. She was a fashion icon more so than Prince as every chick in the 80's dressed like Madonna.

She also is the best selling female recording artist of all time.

I know people appreciate artists more when they die, but Madonna had a much bigger influence on pop culture in the 80's / 90's than Prince did, and she also sold a bunch more records as well. She was by a long shot the more popular artist.

IF you didn't grow up in the 80's, it's hard to explain how popular Madonna was.
I usually agree with you bro but there is absolutely no way you can compare Madonna to Prince. You honestly prefer " Like a virgin" , Material Girl and Vogue over Purple Rain, When Doves Cry, Sign of the Times, Raspberry Barret? Lol! Don't get me wrong, I love Madonna but I guarantee there were more babies conceived from Prince's music than Madonna's....lol

And he still has a bunch of recordings that Warner bros. wouldn't release...
I heard it's alot. I didn't understand how great and talented prince was until after he died. Dude was a monster in the studio. Very unrated. He's a 5 star, but was rated a 3 star. Lol

see how it shake out wen music is released from his vault....estimated an album can be released every year for a century...simply incredible if accurate

Madonna was a sex symbol. She couldn't even tie Prince shoes

Madonna was not just a sex symbol. To say so, means you have no clue about music in the 80's. There were plenty of "sex symbol" singers in the 80's Madonna did not make or break her career because of her looks. She was way ahead of her time in taking on big issues with her music and music videos and was a fashion Icon.

I'd love to see if you think Janet Jackson or Sade were just "sex symbols" as neither sold as much or took on issues like Madonna did.

Nor was Michael Jackson.

I'm still waiting to hear how Purple Rain outdid Thriller.

His sacrifice? Lol cmon. Great musician, but most stop paying attention to him as a performer about 10 years ago. The man made good songs and got paid for them.
u don't know wat u talkin about....research da issue

It's not an issue of taste. By every measurable category possible Madonna not only out does Prince she blows him out of the water.

Yes, I happen to like Madonna's music better than Prince's as a ton of the people defending Prince are only doing so now because he's dead. One of the people in this thread even said they didn't pay attention to Prince until he died.

You named 4 Prince songs which in popularity is about as much as you can name as a lot of his work was not that popular.

Madonna has the more top 10 hits at 38 than any other person in history since it's inception. She is the highest selling female artist of all time.

It's not even really close.

IF I happen to like Madonna's music more than Prince's is not really the issue. I like them both as 80's music is my favorite music, but if you grew up in the 80's comparing Prince to Madonna would be laughable.

LOL, this just shows how out of control some of you are.'

You are comparing a song that still was on the charts 2 full years after it appeared and was still just 1 spot down to a song that just came out? LOL

Also, Mike was the better song writer, most people wash over that.

Go look up all the songs MJack wrote, not only did he write them, since he didn't have a formal musical training he would sit there for hours telling each musician exactly how to play the song he wrote down to every little detail.

Yes, Prince was a better at playing instruments but that is where it stops.

Your confusing/conflating musician with pop star.

I am fully aware. Dont think most of you cared about him for the last decade till a few weeks ago. What was the last album of his that you bought.......diamonds and pearls?
I have 39 studio albums, 3 live albums, 1 remix album, 3 sound track albums, 3 compilation albums, 2 internet albums an a ton of singles....Hit-n-Run Phase 1 & 2 is da last album I bought...I more than likely can get ova 1000.00 for his Sex Suite Album if I sold it...u cant get his work on black market...u have too buy his shyt at his website.... I'm a Prince fan from Day 1...in fact, even met & talked to him & Jerome in da late 80's in Amsterdam at a club...unfortunately didn't give me an autograph, but gave me & my homies backstage passes to his concert in Rotterdam

No one is arguing Prince v. Michael other than you Oven.

People are pissed that Madonna was chosen to represent Prince. Its horrific.

Papi, I'm compiling a huge catalog. PM me and when i"m finished I'll send you a thumb drive. Gave a fellow Cane/Prince fan a prototype last week, 29gigs then, 40gigs now. Concerts, soundboards, outtakes, bootlegs, just gathering as much as I can. Only request is to give a copy to to another Prince fan.

I think Quincy Jones would have a little to say about that.
Also, let's face it "Dangerous" and "Invincible" which he did a lot on his own were not exactly .....well, even good.
And I leave you with, the "King of Pop" was his creation title which he told MTV and radio stations they must use to describe him in order to be allowed to play his music.
Michael Jackson was a great performer and artist. But never once played an instrument on stage, collaborated with Quincy Jones on almost every piece that defines his career and let's face it, with the album Dangerous released 15 years before his death, he was pretty much irrelevant.

I did mention 2010...not to mention an icon award on 2013...u cant rewrite history man

Go do your homework on album sales dude. The guy was in big decline. Im not rewriting anything.....youre the one that disputed madonna being a legend.
u rewriting my words...I neva said she wasn't a legend...just not mine...album sales wasn't da conversation...by ur logic, dats like sayin King Solomon was/or is greater than King Jesus

Well then if you are going to backtrack and say you do think Madonna is a legend then why would her performing in honor of him be a disgrace? For that matter how can a tribute, in general, be an insult? It just seems like complaining to complain.

papii I respect your posts but.............Golden Globe in 07 was 9 years ago......Grammy in 05 was 11 years ago......and 08 was 8 years ago....
that long ago is not being relevant in the Music world..
The point is........ if you asked a recruit who Prince was, they would say....."Prince Who?.....respectfully disagree on his relevance for the modern era of music....he was not there in anyone's consciousness as an entertainer.....nostalgic yes...relevant ...no....

as a musician, producer, or songwriter ....NOT NO...BUT HELL NO

papii, as a musician, no, But as a producer, songwriter and singer, Madonna is right there with him. She has sold more than 300 million CDs worldwide, more than any female artist in history. And more than Prince.

we're not talkin bout album sales....Prince wrote hit songs for her & produced them...she cant say da same for him...again, by dat logic is like sayin King Solomon was/& or is greater than King Jesus because of his enormous wealth or unparalleled wisdom...true greatness is defined by broad influence

How about by this logic:

In her 50s she has sold over 17 million albums. Since 2005 he has sold less than 3.

papii, by no means am I dissing Prince. I'm a huge fan and he is without doubt one of the greatest artists of all time.
Yes, it's true that Prince wrote songs for others. And I take you at your word that he wrote some for Madonna. But by and large Madonna wrote her own songs. She's a gifted songwriter.
They are both musical geniuses. So why quibble over who's better? Throw in Michael Jackson and The Beatles and right there you have the 4 greatest musical acts of the past 60 years.
