The FDA has been busy vetting applications for new Covid 19 Tests.
There has been a lot of publicity about Abbott Labs ID Now rapid test that has a 15 minute turnaround time. They are currently manufacturing 50,000 tests per day and will be up to 75,000 per day by June, and are investing to expand capacity beyond that.
Mesa Bio Tech has a 30 minute test, and is a company founded by scientists that were previously employed by Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Cephid Bio Tech has a 45 minute test, and they were the 13th company issued an EMERGENCY USE AUTHORIZATION by the FDA on March 23rd. As of April 14, 2020 the number of companies issued EMERGENCY USE AUTHORIZATIONS increased to 34, that is an additional 21 companies added to the test manufacturing base in less than a month.
Two of the more recent approvals are OSANG HEALTHCARE .. a South Korean biotech concern, and FOSUN Pharma, a prominent Chinese biotech concern, with an office in Princeton, NJ, FOSUN PHARMA USA.
At that rate there should be 50 firms with approvals by June .. and if we 'assume' an average production capacity of 20,000 tests per day per company (not using the 75,000 figure that Abbott labs has) we would have 1 million per day or 30 million per month. 120 million by the end of september. That is a decent % of the population .. potentially tested. USA.
