The State of Florida's COVID-19 Response Should be the Nation's Model

I have yet anybody answer how did hilter become German Leader. Short history lesson and if you dont believe the answer go to history channel, history books,Google . Let Get started hilter started in the late 20's and early 30s to try to be leader of Germany and in those years there was a world depression you know we had one in the U.S right. Well Adolph rhetoric was the Jewish people were the cause of this in Germany and had owned many businesses in germany. So Adolph blamed the Jewish people that Germans didn't have jobs because the Jews had all the money and these people were evil, gypsie, and the downfall that Germany is not great. Germany lost WWI AND WW2 AND BLAME THE JEWS FOR ALL GERMANYS PROBLEMS SOUND FAMILIAR YOU KNOW THE MEXICANS ARE RAPISTS,MURDERS,ANIMALS AND BLAMED THEM FOR WHY AMERICA NEEDS TO BE GREAT AGAIN THE MEXICANS TAKE YOUR JOBS ALSO. WOW VERY SIMILAR PEOPLE AFTER THE ALLIES FORCES WENT TO CONCENTRATION CAMPS,THEY WENT AND GOT THE GERMAN CITIZENS TO COME TO CAMPS TO SHOW THEM WHAT HILTER HAD DONE. THE NEIGHERHOODS STATED THEY HAD NO IDEA THIS WAS HAPPENING PLEASE WHAT DID THE ALLIES FORCES DO THEY MADE THE CITIZENS DIG AND BURY THE JEWISH PEOPLE ONE MAN TURNED A COUNTRY AGAINST A CERTAIN GROUP OF PEOPLE TO GET HIS POWER. READ IT LOOK IT UP IF YOU THINK THIS IS BS IF YOU KNOW ANY JEWISH PEOPLE ASKED THEM ABOUT IT.WAKE UP AMERICA DONT FALL FOR THE HATERS
Again, keep minimizing the impact of Hitler with this comparison, anti-Semite.

Guess what you know fl has done such a great job cov19 it just came on the news that fl ONLY counted The residents of the state of florida who died of cov19 but not anyone else who was in the state of fl who died here during the virus was not counted at all. This is just The beginning of fl cov19 investigations in too make The numbers look good so they could open the state. The Lady that was fired that made the database i am sure shé has the info to Get baby trump before this is over
It’s disgusting that you actually wish the numbers are higher.

look everybody this shouldint be about the liberal or who is to the left or who is to the right or who is republican or who is democrat if we would have all been on the same page together as a team to fight this thing again together we could have gotten better results but as usual always fighting with each other blaming one and another for things and especially trump with his mind blowing ego of his thinks nothing can ever happen to him under his rule and then blame everyone else but himself for the crap that has happened to our country and you all remember what he said oh its not coming here i will be playing golf in boca while everyone told hm from the beginning that we needed to do something early on so its on his back that this has happened and stop blaming democrats for bitching about what is going on now even the scientist has been fighting with him and even went to congress to talk about it because he was lying about everything and that from a prestiged doctor of medicine again is all about himself everybody weather you like it or not and again it doesint matter if you are on one side or the other he fckd up and everybody knows that but wants to blame everyone else but himself thats it done ad over you decide.

Wrong

I agree De Santis has done a very good job. To be fair, Cuomo was faced with a much tougher task because of the virus' huge spread throughout New York City and Westchester by March 9 or 10, when the country finally woke up and admitted we have a problem.

To me the failing has been at the federal level. From January 23 or so to early March we did basically nothing, other than to prohibit most travel to and from China. However, since the virus was already here, and continued to come in from other countries, that was a good idea, but rather irrelevant. (Not that I think the virus could have been kept out forever anyway.) Moreover, there was and still is no effective federal plan to fight this thing, notwithstanding the warnings dating back to January, and the prior close calls a few years back with bird flu, zika and ebola.

The rest of the world has fought this pandemic through its central government. In our country the federal government has played a secondary role in many respects. Analogies have been made to fighting a war; imagine if WW II had been left to the 50 states to figure out. This was and remains a national crisis, even if some states thus far (because this thing sadly is far from disappearing) have been hit much harder than others. I believe it would have been better faced and will be better faced going forward by a more active role by the federal government, domestically and globally.

By the way, the 1.4 mm cases and 90,000 dead in this country through today will just continue to mount over the coming months, even if at times at a slower pace. I am afraid by Labor Day both of these numbers will at least have doubled, and still be growing. This will have an enormous, scary dampening effect on the recovery of our economy, as many people stay more reluctant to resume "normal" life, and consumer spending comparatively stays low. Since onsumer spending is 70% of our GDP, that is a huge problem. All of this means a long, slow, painful recovery that could make the 2008 financial crisis look like a cakewalk.

Wrong

Everyone told him from the beginning? Fauci was saying in the middle of Feb not to worry and to go ahead ad travel and go on cruises. The Director General of the WHO was still downplaying the severity of COVID at his March 3 meeting with the press and on March 2 we had just over 100 cases in the US. How much earlier exactly was Trump supposed to more about this? You don't want to blame Dems but yet Cuomo totally screwed New York over by his policies, including forcing nursing homes to admit infected patients which resulted in mass deaths in those homes.

All 100% factually correct. Thank you.

I think is very hard for some people to see a Republican Governor praising Democrat Mayors, & Democrat Mayors praising a Republican Governor. Florida is a state where everyone worked together harmoniously, had great results due to that harmony, & some people have a hard time acknowledging that fact. Non-partisan cooperation is a GOOD THING & what states should endeavor to do. Naysayers want to attribute Florida's results to luck, the hot weather, or bogus statistical reporting. As often happens in life, when the truth is difficult to admit, there is a tendency to seek another explanation.

Yep

I suggest you read our constitution and take a civics class. You do realize we are a republic of states who govern themselves, not a centralized government running all of the states? I also disagree that the Feds did nothing from Mid Jan to mid March. The facts say otherwise.

Correct

Only 39% of Americans approve how the federal govt has handled the Corona virus, oer today's poll, and that number is going down rapidly. We are by far the world's leading nation in terms of both cases and deaths - someone royally f'd up here, those awful numbers do not lie. The only possible conclusion is that many other governments handled the situation much better.

Again, you don’t understand statistics and math. We have tested more than all countries combined, including asymptotic people, therefore, we will have a higher number of cases. Most countries, like us in the early periods of this, are only testing those hospitalized with symptoms. If they increased their testing of asymptotic people in their general populations like we have been for the last month, they would likely have seen more cases based on statistical properties. Keep ignoring this.

That is nowhere even close to true.

Tests US - 13,479,242
Tests Russia, Germany, Italy (RGI) - 14,965,083

Three countries combined have tested more the US, despite having about 40m less population and there being, you know, another 175+ countries in the world.

Also for the great job were doing, despite only having 114% population of those 3 countries, we have 219% of the deaths.

Covid Deaths US - 96,377
Covid Death RGI - 44,051

**Three countries used are 2nd, 3rd, 4th ranked countries in terms of cases.

It was true until Russia updated its testing numbers. You also need to consider that Russia was in denial and not tracking these deaths early on. Also, as Dr. Birx has stated, we are overstating the number of Covid deaths counting those never tested and those who had it but died from other causes. Just because someone has Covid and dies, does not mean their death was caused by it. She mentioned this last week or two weeks ago.

I am very glad this thread has engendered so much discussion, but I am a bit amused at some of the partisanship. I know that partisanship often emerges, but look at the Subject Line. I did not say "Governor DeSantis' Covid19 Response", I said "The State of Florida's Covid19 Response", and in my OP I gave credit to our county officials. I have made several other posts mirroring that belief throughout the thread.

My beliefs from the beginning have been that our elected officials (Democrats & Republicans alike) act like adults in Florida, treating all of us like adults, and I still believe that.

I admire the way Florida has handled this problem thus far, as I statef up front. I do give a lot ofcredit to De Santis, who focused immediately on nursing homes and ALFs, where the most vulnerable are. (duhhh.) And by the way, I don't give a damn if he's a Republican or Democrat.

I read recently that on a per capita basis we rank really low as a nation on testing. I do not know who screwed up, but given this fact and the rising virus numbers I keep seeing every day, it's hard for me to give the feds a better than D rating for their handling of this mess. Again, I don't care whether a Democrat or Republican is in charge.

With all this happy talk about Desantis doing a great job, he still lags behind many governors in terms of job performance during this pandemic. Governors from California, Ohio and NY ranked much higher than Desantis.

Also, why is the OP relying on MSM to prove his point of how great Desantis is? Last I heard he thought CNN was fake news. WTF!
^^^hahahahaahahahhahaha this guy thinks CNN isn’t fake news hahahahahaha

Again the cult will believe anything those moron in charge trump Jr Ron desantis says. The paper said so far desantis has tested 6 percent of the 700 nursing homes and 3100 of assisted living facility and that equals 6 percent of 190,000 residents. There are family members who can't contact their relatives because the moron Jr has all these old folks homes on lockdown and aren't testing.dr birx trump lady in charge has stated these old people in nursing homes need testing now. So testing 11,400 people out 190,000 is really top notch by The way 880 elderly people have died in fl elderly care homes. You in the cult really dont have a clue.

The issue with per capita is scalability. Again, math. It sounds like you are looking for any number to point a finger at the federal response.

Yes they did! It was the Governors of NY & NJ as well as their local offcials. Those two states account for 1/3 of Covid cases and deaths in the US yet make up only 7% of the population.

Florida doing a great job today..Only 776 confirmed cases..Our Governor gets all the credit..Especially since yesterday was an off day..1204..Ron gets it and deserves all the credit..

Good post. As I see it, there are three main characteristics why different states are getting hit differently.

- Population density
- Very large cities
- International Travel Hubs

States like NY/CT/RI/MA are all getting hit harder than the rest because they are relatively close and are populated with a lot of people who land from Europe (where most of our cases came from).

No there isn’t. You stand next to someone with Covid outside in the heat and humidity and you breathe in their droplets you will get Covid. FL is all about DeSantis and density.
And social distancing guidance provided by the feds.

You forgot many, not all, sanctuary cities getting hit hard.

CNN has created an excellent chart that brings great perspective to COVID-19's effects state by state. The chart provides not just the totals, but both infections & deaths per 100k of population. Florida's results are stunning. Despite being
1) the 3rd most populous state as well as
2) the 3rd largest in terms of elderly population, & having,
3) BY FAR, NOT EVEN CLOSE, the highest % of seniors among the most populated States,

FLA is only 32nd in terms of infections & 26th in terms of deaths when measured per capita.

This is astonishing! Some critics have called this luck. I say bullshit. We simply have better legislators in Florida, led by Governor Ron DeSantis, who governed far differently than Mr. Cuomo did in New York. While Cuomo ruled that no one could be denied re-admission or admission to a Nursing Home solely based on a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of COVID-19, DeSantis did the opposite, protecting not only the vulnerable nursing home residents, but nursing home staff. He correctly isolated the most at risk Floridians, & prevented the elderly citizen carnage that happened in New York & other states. DeSantis received harsh criticism for allowing some counties to be treated differently than others, but it worked & is still working. And bravo to our Florida Mayors and County Officials as well. Your collective tactics have worked. All media criticisms now fall on deaf ears as the results speak for themselves. Unlike other states, our local & state officials not only cooperated fully, but praised & supported each other. Very different from states like PA, TX, Wisconsin, Illinois, & others. We had legislative unity here in Florida, and there was ZERO partisanship. Florida's response should be the model for the entire nation.

You listed Texas amongst those states that suffered more than Florida due to politics. True that Texas politics can be troublesome, but not with this crisis. Texas' results are better than Florida's. Texas deaths 1500, Florida 2200. Over 65 population: Texas 3.8 mil, Fl 4.4 mil. Overall population: TX 29.0 mil, FL 21.5 mil.

Both did very well, Texas somewhat better.

All true, but Florida is more dense per population. Texas is 269k square miles while Florida is only 66k square miles.
