There are about 19 million Asians living in the United States and they have often been dubbed the Model Minority. What this essentially means is that people here in the United States see Asians as a good minority. They are overly educated, they go to school, they study hard, they have strong family bonds and they make decent money and have good jobs. But what it really means is in spite of the racism or any of the abuse they suffer while they are here, they dont say anything. They stay very quiet and keep to themselves. They turn the other cheek.... and they bare it. The crazy thing about these attacks is most of them have happened in the middle of the day. And they are against elderly Asians. It started off with an attack on a elderly Thai man who was walking in San Francisco and some Young kid came along and just threw him to the pavement. And he died....he eventually died from his injuries. Another guy in Brooklyn who threw a Chinese Woman to the ground and she was 68 years old. Ive have looked in the News and there is just more and more assaults on Asians, there are a bunch of them. A lot of these attacks are on video and its disturbing.
So why are these attacks happening and why are the numbers growing? We just spent the past 5 years with our leader, and former leader, who was such a xenophobe, using hateful rhetoric and abusive words and language, every single day against certain people. And his followers listen to everything he says. And they take it quite literally. So, he has created this incredibly divisive moment, where there is so much anger and so much hatred here.....and, it flows from the top down. So people are listening and responding to his rhetoric.
Secondly, because we didnt handle the Pandemic properly, we are still seeing Americans stricken with COVID-19. Well over 500,000 Americans lost their lives. People ended up without jobs and consequently had no source of income. There were also lockdowns and people were going stir crazy and the easiest thing to do, like we heard from #45 is to blame it on other people. So the Asian people living in this country have become the perfect scapegoat.
Lastly, and probably most importantly, the Asian communities have begun to stand up for their rights. They have started to speak out and fight back.
Unfortunately, a lot of this stuff is fairly new about what is happening and who the perps are. Lets hope and pray that Americans will evolve and grow and have open minds.
