According to Rivals.com's transfer portal rankings, Miami's transfer activity, which includes departures and arrivals, ranks 15th nationally.

Miami ranks 6th in the comprehensive rankings, combining the recruiting class and transfers since December, when the early signing day and winter transfer portal window took place.

Texas, Oregon, Georgia, Ohio State, and Alabama are the only schools that rank higher than Miami in those rankings.


Miami took the top spot in ESPN's transfer portal rankings.

1. Miami Hurricanes​

Miami hasn't won a national title in over 20 years, and its last 10-win season came in 2017. While recent on-field performance has fallen short of past success, coach Mario Cristobal is working the recruiting trail in an effort to change the on-field results. Miami signed a top-10 recruiting class for the 2024 cycle while also adding coveted transfer quarterback Cam Ward. Cristobal didn't rest during the spring transfer period, adding two offensive players ranked in the top 10 of ESPN's transfer player rankings.

The Hurricanes landed top transfer running back Damien Martinez after losing two of their top three leading rushers -- and over 1,110 yards of production -- from 2023. Martinez is an agile back with good power and speed. He was very productive at Oregon State and can reasonably be expected to carry the load in replacing the lost production. Martinez's presence in the backfield should only help Ward by giving the offense good balance. Miami also added a proven receiving target, Samuel Brown, from Houston. Brown caught 62 passes last year and is a tall target that can win 50-50 balls.

The Hurricanes did lose several defensive linemen to the portal but also signed the best defensive line class for the 2024 cycle. Still, there's no substitute for experience. So Miami returned to the portal to add defensive tackle Simeon Barrow Jr. from Michigan State on top of several prior transfers earlier in the process. Barrow is a consistent performer and, at the very least, boosts depth at this spot. Miami should be able to rotate fresh bodies and maintain a stout, aggressive defensive line -- a hallmark of its glory years.

CanesCounty.com has learned that Miami is likely to 'move in a different direction' regarding four-star offensive lineman commit Lamar Williams.

The 2025 commit made his pledge to Miami in February of this year after an unofficial visit. He visited for a second time during spring practice for the calendar year.

The loss of Williams from the class leaves Miami with zero offensive linemen committed to the 2025 class.

According to multiple reports, Zayden Walker, the No. 2 ranked outside linebacker of the 2025 class, will visit Miami before making his commitment decision.

The Georgia native will make his decision on July 5th; he last visited Miami on an unofficial visit in early April.

Walker will choose between Georgia, Miami, Penn State, and South Carolina.

He has official visits set with Georgia (May 31st), Penn State (June 7th), Miami (June 14th) and South Carolina (June 21st).

From a size perspective (6'4", 315 pounds), Muex certainly fits the mold of players that Miami has recruited on the offensive line.

Muex is a people mover who plays with the aggression that offensive line coach Alex Mirabal loves.

Former James Madison DB D'Angelo Ponds could be a nice addition to the roster for the defensive back position.

According to reports, Ponds visited Miami today to see if he can be a fit in Coral Gables after one season at James Madison.

According to Pro Football Focus, Ponds had eight games with a defensive grade above 70.

Ponds is a smaller player at 5'9" and 170 pounds but was productive as a Duke.

Auburn, USC, Pitt, Tennessee, Duke, and Arizona have also contacted Ponds.

Ponds was a two-star prospect from local Chaminade-Madonna High School, the same prep school of current freshmen Zaquan Patterson and Jo Jo Trader.

Miami is trending in the right direction for former Tennessee Edge Tyler Baron.

Baron was the only player to visit the Hurricanes last weekend that did not commit. Reportedly, Ole Miss went in-home with Baron on Thursday. He initially committed to Ole Miss after entering the portal after the 2023 season. Baron flipped his commitment to Louisville and is now back in the portal. LSU is also rumored to be involved.

The 6'5", 260-pounder played four years at Tennessee and registered over 100 career tackles. He had a career-high six sacks last season.

Adding Baron with Rueben Bain, Elijah Alston, Akheem Mesidor, and Malik Bryant would be a formidable pass-rushing team for Miami.

The Miami Hurricanes are continuing to build its roster for the upcoming season.

According to reports, Texas power forward Dillon Mitchell took a visit to Miami on Wednesday.

Mitchell, who stands 6-foot-8 and weighs 205 pounds, is ranked 60th in the Rivals.com transfer portal rankings.

As a sophomore, Mitchell averaged 9.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.0 steals last season. Mitchell shot 58.5 percent from the floor and averaged 29.0 minutes per game helping the Longhorns to a second-round appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

He posted a career-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting with eight rebounds, two assists, one steal, and two blocks against back-to-back champion UConn early last season.

Mitchell also started as a freshman, averaging 4.3 points and 3.9 rebounds on 64 percent shooting.

Mitchell was a former five-star prospect coming out of high school and the fourth-ranked played in the country from the 2022 class. At Montverde Academy High School in Tampa, FL, he was a McDonald's All-American, averaging 12.3 points, ten rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game.

Michigan State DT transfer Simeon Barrow wrapped his visit to Miami, and the Hurricanes seem to be in a good spot to land him.

Florida State, LSU, and Missouri are the other schools he is considering.

Barrow is scheduled to visit FSU this week and should be coming to a decision some time this week.

If he cancels the FSU visit, Miami will be the presumed front-runner.

The departure of Jared Harrison-Hunte to the transfer portal makes Barrow's decision more vital.

According to Pro Football Focus, Barrow scored a season-high 80.5 pressure grade against Ohio State and a season-high 91.9 run defense grade against Iowa.

Barrow finished with season grades of 72.2 (defense), 72.3 (run defense), and 74.3 (pressure).

We all question if this is the year. Is this the year that Miami returns to greatness? Is it the year that Miami returns to national relevancy to never drop out-of-sight, out-of-mind ever again?

The upcoming 2024 season certainly feels like it.

The Hurricanes have won between five and seven games in five of the past six seasons. Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes have put together five- and seven-win seasons in the past two years, and no bowl wins.

We know that Cristobal is an impeccable recruiter and that prowess has translated to the ever-important transfer portal, bringing in four big talents in two days over the weekend.

With arguably the best quarterback since Ken Dorsey (Cam Ward) about to take over this season, this season can ill-afford to be another season that wastes talent.

This past weekend, Cristobal added Oregon State running back Damien Martinez, a powerful 230-plus pound back that produced more than 1,300 yards from scrimmage last season, and Houston's leading receiver, Samuel Brown.

Before this spring window, Miami added defensive end Elijah Alston (Marshall) and safety Mishael Powell (Washington). It also recently added Marshall cornerback Dyoni Hill and Louisville linebacker Jaylin Alderman. Let's not forget the fifth-best recruiting class to pair with the eighth-ranked recruiting class from the prior cycle.

Cristobal now has two 3,500-yard passers (with Albany transfer Reese Poffenbarger), a 1,100-yard rusher, a 1,000-yard receiver (Xavier Restrepo), four returning starters on the offensive line (plus a fifth in Indiana transfer center Zach Carpenter), nine defenders who recorded at least 300 snaps at Miami or elsewhere last season, and a healthy Akheem Mesidor who earned All-ACC Honorable Mention in 2022.

Veteran returning leaders LB Kiko Mauigoa, OL Jalen Rivers, and WR Restrepo will play vital roles for this 2024 team, and young superstars DL Rueben Bain and OL Francis Mauigoa will bring even more to year with their freshman All-American campaigns.

Only two coaches (CBs coach Jahmile Addae and Tim Harris Jr.) were lost, which means the culture and systems will remain unchanged for another year.

Miami has a favorable schedule in 2024. The Power Four teams scheduled have a combined 66-51 record from last season. The two groups of five teams (Ball State and USF) combine for an 11-14 record, and FAMU was one of the best teams in FCS last year, putting together a 12-1 record—its one loss to USF (38-24). Miami avoids Clemson on the schedule, and North Carolina and NC State are not on the schedule, both teams Miami lost to last year.

This year should be the year, but games must played.

The Buffalo Bills signed Miami DT Branson Deen, a Purdue transfer, as an undrafted free agent. In his fifth season as a college player and first as a Hurricane, Deen registered 18 total tackles (six solo) and 2.5 sacks.

Deen was a three-star prospect from Indianapolis, IN, and was ranked as the 39th weakside defensive end in the 2018 class.

The Minnesota Vikings signed Miami LB K.J. Cloyd, a Louisville transfer, as an undrafted free agent. In his fourth season as a college player and first as a Hurricane, Cloyd tallied 44 tackles (21 solo), 6.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, and one pass defended.

Cloyd was a three-star, unranked prospect from Ellisville, MS, in the 2020 class.

The New York Jets signed another former Hurricane WR Tyler Harrell. Harrell appeared in eight games in one season at Miami. The Louisville transfer had four receptions for 45 yards as a Hurricane.

Harrell has blazing speed and ran a 4.28 at Miami Pro Day.

The local product from Miami Columbus High School was a three-star prospect from the 2018 class.

The Buffalo Bills signed another Hurricane, DB Te'Cory Couch. The former Cane played five seasons at Miami, totaling 153 tackles (40 solo), 2.5 sacks, 21 pass deflections, and four interceptions. Couch had a career-high 38 tackles, three interceptions, a forced fumble, and a sack in his final season.

The South Florida native from local Chaminade-Madonna High School was a three-star prospect and ranked as the 49th-best cornerback from the 2019 class.

He rejoins his former Miami DB coach, Jahmile Addae, now in Buffalo.

Aside from Simeon Barrow visiting Miami early next week, the buzz is that fellow defensive lineman Derrick Harmon will join him.

Harmon started 15 games for the Spartans last season and has two years of eligibility left. Last season, he registered 40 tackles (16 solo), 3.5 for loss, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and a pass defended.

The Detroit, Michigan native was a three-star player coming out of Loyola High School and could be an immediate impact player for an already loaded defensive line.

In the last two seasons, Brown played in nine games and started three, passing for 411 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions. He completed 47-of76 passes (62.2 percent) and rushed for 280 yards, averaging 3.9 yards per carry with two TDs on the ground. He also had a reception for nine yards.

Last season, the 6'4" 284-pound defensive linemen had 26 total pressures, two sacks, 22 hurries, and 20 total tackles with 506 snaps played.

According to Pro Football Focus, his best-graded game was his last in the Pinstripe Bowl against Rutgers (Defensive - 77.5, Run Defense - 80.6, Tackling - 76.7, Pressure - 69.3), totaling four tackles.
